When do wastegates generally begin to rattle?

Folks,

I've been reading about the problems with the earlier models and the wastegates rattling. I think BMW redesigned the turbos around 2007, correct? I have an Oct 2007 build 335i with 18K miles and I have NEVER heard any rattling whatsoever. I had to watch some youtube videos to find out what it is supposed to sound like... As a matter of fact, up till about a month ago, my car had stock, factory software. The only reason why they updated the software was because they had to replace a faulty passenger airbag sensor which forced them to do a complete software reflash.

Anyways, can someone help me understand things a bit better:

1. After about how many miles do the waste gates generally begin to rattle? I am at 18K but the car is 2008 model.

2. Do I have the revised version of the turbos or not? Oct 2007 build.

3. There was some talk about the wastegate actuators being redesigned, correct? What's this all about?

I really appreciate your help and input.

Thanks in advance.

Mine is a 07, I have 48k miles with no rattles at all. I think it varies to be honest.

Mine started around 5K miles. The wastegates were replaced at about 18K miles. I now have about 25K miles and it rattles worse than a diesel. Mine came back about 4K miles later. If you are 42K miles before it starts you are the anomaly. This is so common. Majority of the N54 up 2010 rattle like crazy. A co-worker just bought a 2010 recently. After about 2 weeks the guy comes by my desk all panicked tells me he thinks his engine is going to die. I go listen and tell him to relax and get acquainted with it because this is pretty much there to stay, and not unusual at all. He took it in, they told him its normal. He is clueless so he is happy now. He is surprised BMWs sound so crappy.

I have a Feb 08 build with almost 30K and I haven't heard even a hint of the waste gate rattle - knock on wood. I don't think it has much to do with the year of the car (except perhaps for the real new ones), the mileage, or anything for that matter. It's kinda like the HPFP from what I've been hearing - not a clear connection to anything. Those in the know please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm interested in the truth as well...

Edit: Oh - forgot to say "knock on wood!"

I agree. Who knows?!?! Myself and other members here have had them replaced several times, but with seemingly no complete fix for the issue. It would be interesting to compare which cars have it and which don't. There has to be a reason...
