2011 --> 2010 E92 Retrofit: Euro LCI Tail Lights

O HAI GAIZ,

I'm going to be retrofitting some things from the 2011 LCI E92s. Thought I post pics and maybe help a few who are doing the same. I was initially going to order a 2011 MY E92, but there was a sweet price on a new 2010 on the lot I couldn't refuse. Naturally, I lost some cool updates I wanted from Bavaria. Time to fix that.

The 2011 -/+ paddle shifters as well as leather steering wheel cover are on order. I'll post further info when I get those installed later on.

So far tonight, I've installed one side of the LEDs. Too lazy to do the other side tonight. Yes, these are the European-spec LCI tails. For those of you who don't know the difference, it's the same exact thing as the US one. Only difference is the turn signal/blinker is amber/orange (exterior housing is still red). I think it'll be a lot safer on the freeway and it makes the car seem more expensive like the F01 7 series . Now all I need to do is wait for Patrys to code my car!

Crappy iPhone comparison pics. More will be posted later on....

Completely worth the $800 this is going to cost me when I get my credit card bill lol

It's not that hard to install. You don't even have to remove the trunk liner for the outer part. It's held on by three nuts. The center one on the trunk is held on by one, but the liner needs to be removed (which also isn't that hard).

There are errors, yes. That's why I need Patrys to hurry up and code my car *cough*. Dash displays bulb out and the turn signals flash super fast, everything else works fine. I could throw on some resistors, but that's probably detrimental in the long run.

I will retrofit the lci tailights as well. Now, about the + - paddle shifters, how will you do that? Do you need to buy a completely new steering wheel?

I haven't had a chance to see how it works. Supposedly, it's the same plug and everything as the silly ambidextrous paddles I have now. From the pics, the original has 3 wires. One for +, center for ground, and third for -. The new ones have only the ground and one plug per side. I just need a really long T20 driver to remove the airbag unit and I should be good to go. We'll see later this week!

So, the only thing I would need to do is buy the new paddleshifters. Take the old ones out, put the new ones in and that's it? They work?
By any chance, do you have the part numbers of the new paddleshifters?

The part number is: 61319229283. It may not show up in some places as it's still very new for most BMW parts databases. They are about half the price of the M3 DCT ones which sell for about $650 (a little less than $500 at Tischer).

I THINK the only thing you need to buy is the paddle shifters and it would be plug & play, but I think you should wait until this guinea pig reports back. Besides, these paddle shifters are too expensive to be paperweights.

Actually, the pre-LCIs are brighter. Only thing brighter on the turn signals. LED vs regular filament light is usually something for the human eye. Cameras suck at capturing their individual qualities. Although I have to admit, the LED light distribution among the tail light assembly seems more even and uniform.

Imo the fat tubes are brighter than the lil tubes, altho i didnt take side by side pix of mine 4 months ago so the camera capture thing goes out the window for me. Also I dont see why LCI tails would downgrade light output. How did it come out to 800?

Love it, I just upgraded my lights yesterday and they look killer. I had some local shop do the coding today but they couldn't code it properly. The fast blinkers are gone but I have the minor flickering on start up and bulb error on the dash so I sent money to Patrys today and I'm waiting for him to code as well, lol.

Nice pictures and comparison, it's growing on me. The new turn signal here looks a lot like the E90 LCI turn signal now.

Got the other side on. Car looks a lot more expensive, if that makes any sense.
