I spent about an hour trying to program homelink in the first car I bought that had it... I was reading the directions but kinda being stupid about it.
It seems like a lot of people, myself included, hold the remote near the homelink unit, pair it according to the instructions, and expect it to work, but it won't. There's actually TWO parts to it Part 1 lets the homelink learn the code to TALK to the opener, but the opener and homelink aren't linked yet Part 2 syncs the code between homelink and the opener So first, you hold your clicker near the homelink unit, when it syncs that means homelink now has the code it needs to talk to the opener, second you push the learn button on the opener, then you push the homelink button until the two of them sync, and the garage door opens/closes. Note that, as recommended, you do the first part with the garage door opener unplugged, off, or far enough away that it won't open close while you're trying to do the initial homelink programming. Hope this helps; I was getting so frustrated when mine wasn't working, I didn't think I was that much of an idiot!

Button 1 is for rolling codes. 2 and 3 are for non-rolling codes. Determine which one you have. If your garage motor has a learn button, push that and hit button 1 twice.

Op try pushing the learn button on the garage door motor, then sync the remote with the car. |

If I remember correctly, it was a PITA for the homelink to grab the code from the remote. I ended up holding it close to the rearview mirror, and then it worked. Holding it near your lap didn't work for me. |

Ehh.. how old is it? You generally have to flip the light cover down to see it..

I've posted this elsewhere... took me several tries over the years with various homelink cars before I got it: Every instruction I ever got says press/hold the transmitter (once) AS LONG AS IT TAKES to get the mirror to learn the transmitter code; if you have rolling codes, it appears you need to press/hold the target mirror button first and then press/hold the transmitter button TWICE (for a few seconds each click with a pause in between) and then the mirror gets it. I think it needs more than one click on a roller to learn the "rolling" algorithm.
hope this helps someone...

ALL Three buttons can be programmed for rolling or non-rolling codes. I have 2 doors with openers and BOTH have rolling codes. 2nd Button is for one, 3rd for the other. First button is unused for now. Rolling code openers require the 2-step programming process described earlier in the thread. Old Remote to Home link, then Home link to Opener. |

If you don't have a learn button, ( check close as has been said, it's sometimes under the cover over the light bulb,) then it doesn't have rolling codes and syncing the old remote to the home link will open the garage opener.
Old openers had codes you can set by little switches inside the Remote & on the Opener. That code would be transmitted to the Home link when you sync it. |

And having the manual for your door opener as well as the E90 manual is very helpful - especially for locating the learn button.
I have one car programmed for the left mirror button and one for the right and I'd recommend the right (button 3) as hitting button 1 tends to throw my mirror out of alignment. Tom |

I had this problem too at first until I started putting my index finger on top of the mirror and I push the button with my thumb, kind of "squeezing" the mirror to open the door. My mirror is never out of alignment.

Directions for programming a garage door opener with a rolling security code:
1. Clear the memory by pressing and holding the outer two buttons until the light flashes rapidly. This normally takes about 20 seconds but seems like an hour. 2. Hold the original garage door opener within 2-4 inches from the transmitter in the car. Simultaneously press the transmit button and the selected button on the car transmitter. Hold both until the light flashes rapidly and then release. 3. Locate the training or learn button on the receiving unit. Press and hold this button for two seconds. Press and hold the selected button on the car transmitter for two seconds. 4. Done, give it a try. If it doesn't work try it again or call Homelink at 800-355-3515 for help. |

Since this thread won't die I will also add on. I tried for hours for days and even with my advisor on the phone to no avail. Untill I finally read in a thread to literally put door opener between windshield and mirror almost touching. To get it to receive code. I know you say like I did that makes no sense cus my garage door opener opens half a mile away. Apparently BMW put the cheapest smallest or lack there of an antenna for receiving programming signals. Good luck
