I custom ordered a BMW, but I don't want to be stuck with a lemon

I custom ordered a BMW about 1 month ago and it's already on the boat steaming across the Atlantic Ocean. It's a 335is with the N54 engine.

I had no idea the 335i's were plagued with so many issues and now I'm frightened because losing power on the highway seems like a really big safety issue to me. I've also read other horror stories on this site and other regarding the 335i.

I saw the ABC news report yesterday and this is no joke. It's a serious safety issue. My dealer never disclosed these problems to me.

Is there any way I can cancel my order? Will I lose my deposit? I really don't wanna be stuck with a 50 thousand dollar lemon.

If you cancel your order and buy another car from the same dealer, you may not lose the deposit.

I'm not going to act like you'll for sure be affected by the issues, but there's also a calculated risk you're just going to have to take.

It's not as bad as it seems on the forums, but it's still something to consider.

Well I think your exaggerating a little but why dont you ask the dealer instead of us if you can cancel?

Its really a hit or miss type deal, and the parts are covered under warranty.

I can only speak for myself, but I have had a ton of issues with my 08 335i.

Once the dealer sells the car to another buyer they are legally obligated to refund the deposit.

Before you walk away, you should know that there are many of us who have never had any issues. My '07 335 was fine. My '11 335is so far (2500 miles) is fine. It's a fun car.

This is pretty important. Plus, what if BMW finds the fix soon (against all predictions)? Then you'd probably wonder what if....

Did you do any background or research on the vehicle or did you just know you wanted a BMW?

All I know is if I had a 335is on the way the only thing I would be is excited. I'm concerned about the issues and how BMW plans to resolve it but it's not like it affects all the cars. Although hard data is near impossible to obtain, I'd imagine it's under 10%. What's more, I've seen very few reports of a problem with the 335is. Not sure why that is but I haven't. Possibly just b/c there haven't been as many purchased...who knows.

i'd walk away any day. That's entire reason why my entire line up is 28 instead of 35. Yes it does not happen to everyone, but the possibility and uncertainty would drive me insane. Too bad you didn't do research before buying the car. I don't expect any automaker to be perfect, so I have to rely on a lot of research prior to buying any car

I did research and was familiar with the fuel pump issue. My impression was that it happened mostly to the earlier 335i models.

Nobody has done any studies to determine how widespread the problem actually is. All cars ( regardless of make or model) seem to have some issues. The fact that they are now recalling 130,000 vehicles is really worrisome.

It's hard to determine how prevalent the problem is because information is scattered.

I did do research, but information is so scattered it was hard for me to determine how widespread the problem was.

So many cars, especially luxury cars, have some issues.

But this recall really put things into perspective for me.

As far deposit goes, dealer will return it back to you, I've never heard anyone loosing theirs. I cancelled an X5 3.0 back in 2001 and dealer gave my deposit back.

All cars have problems, some problems I can live some I can't and everyone is different in terms of threshold of pain; just read some of the post on HPFP and decide if that happens to you can you live with it or not.

Let's say its is a lemon once you get it. California has very strict lemon laws and if it truly is a safety concern you can lemon it. Frankly you are blowing this a bit out of proportion and it sounds like you might be a bit younger and naive to boot. Sorry if it offends you.

Worrying about spending 50 thousand dollars on a lemon is being naive?

Huh?

Go drive a 335is again....then try and cancel your order. As long as you don't void your warranty then don't worry about the problems. You'll get a nice BMW loaner to drive.

Sorry you will lose your deposit. The HPFP sticky was posted on here in December 2009. It is not our fault you didn't do your research. So sorry, but you must keep the car. Ok Ok we will throw you a set of floor mats.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Oh please, the problems are so overblown. 335i is such a damn fun car. I bought this car knowing full well about the problems. It didn't stop me. The car is so fast for the money that it overshadows these problems.

And the fuel pump has a 10yr warranty. Not everyone will have problems, even less with the new software that primes the fuel pump as soon as u unlock the door.

They announced 10yr warranties for the fuel pumps in the 2011 335i and 335is?

Link?

do a search on the forum, they do have it for the states. But in the event that HPFP fails on the highway where you are doing 70-80 mph, good luck not getting rear ended
