To wastegate retrofit or not, that is the question.
So I had my car in for long cranks and I asked about the lag from the new software. They just called me and said I would be getting a new pump and it was up to me if I wanted the wastegate retro fit or not. My choice is get some throttle response back, but accept that they won't do anything further if I have noisy wastegates. The shop forman basically said it would be a forgone conclusion that I would have the noise. I plan to keep the car for awhile out of warranty and am worried about shooting myself in the foot with having to do more repairs in the long run.
My question goes out to those of you who have had the retrofit done: is the throttle response worth it? |

Yes, definately worth it. Even with the wastegate valve conversion, I don't have the throttle response below 2k that I had originally but it pulls better in low rmp's than w/o it.

my progression was software --> frustration --> new wastegates -->revert waste gate operation to original --> new turbos, now im pretty happy but i do have the clicking for the first 45 seconds of startup

i dont think its a foregone conclusion.
I have the retrofit and no rattle. I found the lag to be dangerous. nothing like going to power on when going to pass someone, exiting a curve, etc and having nothing happen for a half a second. also, if the rattle is bad, despite the confusing language in the SIB, I think you can probably get something done about it. others here have. |

What retrofit option are you guys talking about? I had my actuators replaced and it got rid of the really nasty part - awful noise accelerating and deaccelerating -but I still have rattle. I just installed DPs and now I can really hear it and it ticks me off considering I already went through a replacement.

So it sounds like its still a worthwhile thing to do even if it does introduce some rattling. My big hesitation is longevity of the parts if I do it cause it sounds like BMW's stance is if you do this, there is no recourse for you on bad wastegates unless you pay out of pocket.

yeah seems like these will just keep going bad. Same boat here, 2 actuator replacements, softwares, and new turbos, still rattling just as bad. Might just have to shell out for a procede upgrade Im tired of the rattling and waiting for JB3 G4

Hmm. Well my car is a build date 11/06. So the next time I dealer my car I ask for the retrofit and a software update? Whats up with some members claiming that BMW won't cover the wastegates then? Or am I misunderstanding this...

anyway, some people's dealers have apparently been telling them this. that is not the way that I read the updated SIB. here is the slightly older SIB: http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B111307g.htm |
