Post-50K mileage costs 335i

I know there are ton of forum members here on the site with their 335i's past 50k miles (factory warranty) period with no extended warranties. Has anybody ran into any major repairs aside from regular maintenance? I am asking because I have a limited time to decide whether to purchase extended warranty or not from the dealer. The general consensus is that it is a good idea, but I just want to gauge how much owners that DO NOT have warranty past 50k miles spent in the miles after that. It would be nice to figure out amount invested and mileage! Please share your rough numbers if you got them! Thanks.

How has your car been? Are you the original owner? Has it ever had any tune on the engine at all whatsoever?

If it's ever had a tune, I would strongly recommend an extended warranty. The numbers are piling up for bad turbos / wastegates.

If it's never had a tune, and you're the original owner, it's a tough call. If you've been vigilant on the maintenance, and I don't mean the BMW schedule, you may not need it. If all you've done is the recommended "free" maint, it could be a worth while investment to get the warranty.

They usually run +/- $2k, and on these cars, It won't take but one repair to make $2k a wise investment.

If these cars are anything like the Audi B5S4 (twin turbo, etc) I'd highly recommend getting a service contract/extended warranty.
The service contract I bought back in 2005 for one of my Audi B5S4's paid for itself literally 6x over. (cost me $2k and paid out over $12k)

With that said, I will be buying a service contract for my 335 when the factory warranty runs out.

...my 2¢

Again, for the sake of a 'gamble' I most likely WILL be getting the extended warranty.

I am just trying to gauge that people who did not have a CPO / or any other extended warranty and what kind of repair bills they ran into. I know that there is tons of 'ohh if this goes wrong or if that goes wrong or one repair bill will run you 2K + on it's own' all over this forum...it would be nice to hear someone i guess 'confirm' that those astronomical repair bills do actually exists in many cases and warranty money is otherwise would of been well spent.

Mine is still in warranty but it will end in 2 months. Personally my car hasn't had any major problems (only a burnt halo bulb, break sensors, seatbelt assist arm), but I bought an extended warranty just for the peace of mind cause the car has turbos.

I'm also going to do a pre-warranty expiration inspection at one of the BMW independent shops. I recommended my friend to do it, and they found out some minor leaks (engine or transmission i forgot) along with some potential regulator problems on his '07 750i. It takes only about less than an hour and roughly $50 around the Atlanta area. Well worth it in my opnion no matter if you have extended warranty or not.

I did not get the extended warranty. I am at 85k miles now, racking up about 3k per month. I (knock on wood), have not had any expenses thus far other than general maintenance. I will need new thrust rods at my next oil change (90k), with a installed cost of $660. I also will be getting coilovers next spring, as the suspension is starting to get a bit soft. New suspension might not have been covered under warranty anyways, though. So, for me, as long as nothing crazy happens in the next 15k miles, it would not have been worth it.

Just remember too that the 100k service will be between $1200-1500 or so.

My '07 335i, which had something like 66k miles when I turned it in a few months ago, had fuel pump #2 go out somewhere around 55k or something. That was about it besides brakes and other normal stuff.

Are you serious? What they'll do for $1200-$1500? Replace the whole fuel system, I hope....

Yeah, I am serious, unfortunately. I don't remember off the top of my head what they do, I will have to look it up. That seems to be standard fare for the luxury cars nowadays, though. My wife's G35x and my old S4 both were in the same ball park. It's a lot of money, but one thing I have learned over time is to not skimp on the maintenance!

I'd consider an extended warranty on any newer car these days. Not only are parts and labor much more expensive than in the past, but the cost cutting in production is very apparent in the latest models of any brand.

still interesting in seeing what costs people accrued past the 50k / 4 year warranty who did not opt for extended warranties on their 335i's. Can anyone else chime in on what expenses you had (not hpfp related as that carries its own warranty) and if there was anything 'major' that had to be repaired!

I'm at 66K on an 08. No problems so far. Just routine maintenance.

55k - Just spent $1300 on a bad SZL sensor and now I have a turbo leaking oil. Considering a M3 before this gets too costly.

i had my 2008 335 coupe for 42,000/3 yrs before returning it at lease-end. had two incidents of brakes squeaking that needed new pads and rotor adjustments with a few oil changes, airfilters, wipers, and some bulb burnouts inbetween the two incidents (and loaners while it was in the shop). im halfway on the issue...but if i had to choose, i'd get the warranty. i rather pay the amount up front and not worry about it than being lazy about getting repairs done because i don't want to fork over the money there and then.
