Unusual start-up

Yesterday and today, my E90 has been acting up. When first starting it up, there's a delay, a 1-2, then crank occurs. All the windows & lights work fine, so I'm not sure if it's the battery. Although, today... it happened again, but this time, this yellow exclamation point inside some circular gear/sprocket popped up. I shift it into Reverse, and it engaged a bit brutal. Tried it in Drive as well, same brutal force. I shifted back to park and turned it off. Cranked it right back on, and it started up and shifted fine. Any thoughts? My 07 E90 (335i) has 58K miles.

HPFP is about to fail...

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=333519

Read that and the 50000000000000000000000 other threads about this....

It is possible that it could be something else I guess....but get it to the dealer ASAP and make sure to mention the HPFP and make sure they don't spend weeks replacing other things before they finally admit and realize that it is/was indeed the HPFP...

There's no way this guy has been a member since 07 and doesn't know that....I'm starting to call BS on some of these HPFP stories.

My radio doesn't get loud..HPFP
my seatbelt sticks...HPFP
It cost me $7 more to fill up today...HPFP

Can we have an HPFP section and get rid of all these similar threads?

Until they get the problem for sure fixed for good, I think we're stuck with them.....I'll probably lose my mind eventually over the stress...I almost wish mine would just go already...

Well, called my previous SA, and based on our discussion, it sounds more like a bad battery. The vehicle will hesitate to start/crank for a few secs, and then va-room, it'll go. In addition, after it starts, it's given me either the ABS or gearbox/sprocket warning light. B/c of the lower variance of voltage, these warning signs are being thrown as well. Does that make sense? Anyone else experience issues like this right before your battery died?

I'm not sure what symptom he described would lead you to think it was HPFP. You might be a little jumpy.

Almost every dealer tries to say it's something else when it ends up being the HPFP, injectors, LPFP, coil packs, etc....but 99% of the time, long cranks are the first symptom of a HPFP about to fail....

They need to scan it to see what codes come up to know for sure....hopefully it will be something minor...but then again...maybe you get the new pump/software/etc now before it dies when you're driving somewhere dangerous...

You might be right....but long cranks is the main symptom, right? But I could be jumping to conclusions...I'm probably losing my mind with the HPFP thing...

For one, my problem isn't HPFP related for sure, as I've had mine replaced like three times already, w/ the 993 pump (or whatever was after 881). The startup issue isn't so much long cranks, but more like it just doesn't seem to have the sudden umf to crank and start. The weak battery makes more sense, since it's chirping other weird issues like the ABS or the tranny (yellow sprocket/gear symbol).

lol...I think you misinterpreted. He didn't say there was a long crank, he said he hits the button and there is a 1-2 second delay, then the crank occurs.

A long crank would be...you hit the button, there is an immediate crank which last several seconds.

Well, this week I finally had BMW roadside assistance to tow my vehicle from my house. They initially sent a guy to try to jump-start it...fixed the issue for a just a few hours, but it was hopeless. So yesterday morning, had them tow it since I still have less than a year left for free roadside assistance. Dealership did determine it was the battery, and I'm about to pay about $500 drive-out price....UGH! It's also getting the HPFP/firmware update via the recall. The bummer part of all is that I've been past my warranty since this past June '10.

$485 + tax... but gladly I'll be able to use a 10% off coupon that's being matched from another dealership. But yes, the charges include the battery and the 'charging diagnostic' fee.
