changed my own oil yesterday in the 335. 2 questions.

It is easier to change the oil in my e36 328i for these 2 reasons: no plastic shield covering the entire bottom of the car and the filter sits straight up in the housing.
in the e90:
when the drain plug was removed oil shot out so fast that it made some kind of weird fluttering noise that i think was caused from the oil clipping the edge of the plastic from bottom shield. there was some oil that got under the shield so I assume this was it. I see in this link http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...1-e92-e93.html
what appears to be oil dripping from the plastic shield so if that is normal , then i'm ok with it. I even had my car on a slant where the bolt angled down more and it still did it. just a bit to clean up as I was shoving paper towels in there to get the oil out of inside the shield..

also, what is directly below the filter housing? I ask because some oil dripped down to the right of the housing when I removed it to replace ( it is at an angle and hard not to do) and it drops off somewhere you can't see. I had even shoved a paper towel in there before taking it out to try to prevent that but it got past it. I've pics of that happening too. I hope it isn't a belt or something.

thanks.

I didn't get any splatter on my 330xi when I did a change about 2 months ago. Also there is a door that swings down so you can access the drain bolt....so you don't have to remove the whole plastic covering.

How long did it take you? It only took me 15 minutes to lift, support, drain, replace oil filter, and refill. It was my first time on an E90 too.

I didn't take the whole plastic shield off, if I had I would not have had any oil on the plastic shield. Maybe there is something different in the 330xi and my 335i that causes the oil to catch the plastic. I can't help but think that by looking at the shield in the pics from that link I put as there was oil dripping from his too. It only took 15 minutes like it does on the e36 to change the oil. I spent about 30 minutes extra just cleaning up the oil splatter.

Next time try to drain it without opening the oil filler cap until the end. Maybe that will slow the flow and make less of a mess. That rhymes...
