Here on this board, which I am assuming most users are U.S. based, people talk about 328i as if it is a totally useless engine, even though it has similar power rating as the e36 M3 of a short 11 years ago. (how much have roads, or people's driving skills, improved over the last 11 years that would make a 'fast' car then a 'slow' car now?)
A 320i in U.S.? It would not stand a chance, and BMW knows it. |

Since it would cost something like 25 000 K USD....I think every person graduating from high school working at the local McDonalds will have one.
The 1 and 3 series are already letting anyone with a college degree own one...exclusivity ain't with BM and Merc Even Porsche is coming out with a cheap boxster and cheap Cayenne...(40 K range)...gonna dilute the prestige. |

I personally wouldn't buy it, but it wouldn't chap my ass one bit. Automakers are expanding their ranges to offer more choices to larger customer bases at better prices. In my eyes this is forward progress, and doesn't cheapen the car I drive one bit, because it's the same car regardless of how many models are below it and how many are above. It stands upon it's own merit. Prestige comes from offering a superior product relative to the competition, not by "being" exclusive. It's just that better products typically cost more. |

I have no problems with Porsche making other cars...to be honest, the 911 has the engine in the wrong place. And it doesn't quite look nice -- If they could make an R8 like car, all would be well. A 40 K porsche...every college kid in Cali is gonna have one. |

Let them do what they deem is best, and make your purchasing decisions based on the outcome of this. If you don't wanna be "seen" driving the same bodystyle (though likely completely different driving experiences) as lots of others, you're probably gonna have to pay for that. Again, this entire concept is hypothetical, but I guess in my case, "brand image" doesn't factor into it enough that seeing a 320 all over the place will affect my decision making that drastically. I bought the car I wanted to drive, not the one I wanted to be seen driving. |

I agree. I would be more interested in the 320d.

If it did appear in the USA, then it would be far too cheap. You already have cars literally less than 1/2 the price of most other places in the world. A 320i in Europe costs a similar amount to a 335i in the USA. As TheRox says, if a 320i was to make it to US, it would be too cheap to keep up the BMW image.
Regarding performance.. not many people in the USA would buy it, the engine isn't large enough or fast enough. A 320d may work though. The diesel feels strong although it does clatter quite a bit. Need the 323d - with twinpower diesel or whatever. |
