Here on this board, which I am assuming most users are U.S. based, people talk about 328i as if it is a totally useless engine, even though it has similar power rating as the e36 M3 of a short 11 years ago. (how much have roads, or people's driving skills, improved over the last 11 years that would make a 'fast' car then a 'slow' car now?)

A 320i in U.S.? It would not stand a chance, and BMW knows it.

no, only because of the boatload of problems it seems to have.

check the weight of an e36 M3 and the weight of a e90 328i and then reevaluate your argument...

Since it would cost something like 25 000 K USD....I think every person graduating from high school working at the local McDonalds will have one.

The 1 and 3 series are already letting anyone with a college degree own one...exclusivity ain't with BM and Merc

Even Porsche is coming out with a cheap boxster and cheap Cayenne...(40 K range)...gonna dilute the prestige.

A Panamera owner complaining about "diluting" Porsche's prestige? Lol...

I personally wouldn't buy it, but it wouldn't chap my ass one bit. Automakers are expanding their ranges to offer more choices to larger customer bases at better prices. In my eyes this is forward progress, and doesn't cheapen the car I drive one bit, because it's the same car regardless of how many models are below it and how many are above. It stands upon it's own merit. Prestige comes from offering a superior product relative to the competition, not by "being" exclusive. It's just that better products typically cost more.

If the Canadian 323i 2.5L was offered at the same 328i prorata as in Canada, it would be 28450$US.

At least the Panamera costs a good penny. I don't doubt for a second that with the Panamera you're paying for status. There are many cars that can do what the Pamaera 4 or 4S do...at less cost (Audi A7 aka Panamera light, BMW M5, Jag). Panamera is about status first and handling...and if you have the larger engine cars, power too.

I have no problems with Porsche making other cars...to be honest, the 911 has the engine in the wrong place. And it doesn't quite look nice -- If they could make an R8 like car, all would be well.

A 40 K porsche...every college kid in Cali is gonna have one.

The Boxster has been out for over 10yrs in that general price segment, and the brand has not been "cheapened" one bit in my eyes. Who cares if you see them all the time - I already probably see 20 E9x's a day...exclusivity comes with price, and for the most part, if you aren't spending over 80k, you're not going to get it. BMW can sell all the "cheap" cars it wants if it helps them stay in business and continue to produce faster, better handling, and more luxurious cars across all price points. In conjunction with Porsche's "non-traditional offerings" they have been releasing some of their most badass cars ever...Carrera GT, GT3 and GT2 RS, and numerous other "special edition" 911 which for the most part aren't to my taste but hey, I'm not running their company.

Let them do what they deem is best, and make your purchasing decisions based on the outcome of this. If you don't wanna be "seen" driving the same bodystyle (though likely completely different driving experiences) as lots of others, you're probably gonna have to pay for that. Again, this entire concept is hypothetical, but I guess in my case, "brand image" doesn't factor into it enough that seeing a 320 all over the place will affect my decision making that drastically. I bought the car I wanted to drive, not the one I wanted to be seen driving.

I agree. I would be more interested in the 320d.

A mere 165 lbs.

Curb weight: 3175 lbs E36 Sedan M3, vs. 3340 lbs E90 328i.

If it did appear in the USA, then it would be far too cheap. You already have cars literally less than 1/2 the price of most other places in the world. A 320i in Europe costs a similar amount to a 335i in the USA. As TheRox says, if a 320i was to make it to US, it would be too cheap to keep up the BMW image.

Regarding performance.. not many people in the USA would buy it, the engine isn't large enough or fast enough. A 320d may work though. The diesel feels strong although it does clatter quite a bit. Need the 323d - with twinpower diesel or whatever.

Due to arbitrage, the price of tradable goods such as cars are the same globally. (Cars are actually imperfectly tradable but the volume is so great and transaction cost per unit so low this imperfection is a very minor contributor to price) The main reason specific markets experience disparities in price (for relatively tradable goods) are nuances of policy, including import tariffs (and export subsidies), exchange rate, and barriers to market entry. If the world traded freely, the same 3 series would cost the same in Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, the UK, and the US.

I seriously doubt BMW a e9X 320 would be that inexpensive. First it would severely dilute 328i sales for the many who buy based on brand name. Second, at that price it would have to be decontented to the extent that it would probably lack power windows, etc. Few in the US want a stripped BMW.
