335is Turbo Lag BS or not...

Calling all 335is owners. Is this turbo lag talk legit? I mean, I avoided a great deal on a CPO 2008 335i due to the horrible, awful, end-of-the-world HPFP failure issue. I ordered a 2011 335is in August and delivery is in two weeks and now I'm reading a Prius will beat me off the line at traffic lights!!!!! For real, what's the deal here?

There is some turbo lag but it's not bad.....you will love the car...

Just get a piggy back or some other tune and that gets rid of it right away

it is my understanding that the 335is uses the N54, which is prone to the horrible, awful, end-of-the-world HPFP failure issue.

I think you are referring to the DCT transmission lag. The N54 engine in the 335i and 335is has very little turbo lag. But I read the DCT transmission has lag issues in D mode when engaging 1st gear. The reverse engaging is even worse.

Whoever said or wrote that a Prius would beat a 335is off the line is a Chromosome short.

The dct lag is real, but not too bothersome to me. Driving in sport/sport all the time seems to generally cure it. It is definitely NOT turbo lag, however, since it is most noticeable in reverse and idle where there would be no boost anyways.

Even with a little turbo lag and some dct lag, the car is great. As an is owner I wouldn't say either of these two issues would have infuenced my purchase decision at all. And fwiw, I owned a 2007 335 6mt and a 2010 Audi s4 before my 335is.

I've noticed all non-335i owners, specifically 328/330 owners, say stuff like this

The extra power and agility is worth 10 HPFPs :P

You can't put a tune on an iS right?
Otherwise... why not just get an i and tune it..

i didn't mean it in a way that the N52 is better.. im indifferent, however, i like my car.

i meant it like this:

the OP passed up a "great deal" on an 08 because he was afraid of HPFP problems, but he went ahead and purchased a brand new 335is, which happens to encounter the same HPFP problems..

I see.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

But i have to admit I have seen a lot of "I didn't get the 335i because of the HPFP"
When, until you really own a 335i, you see how it is.

I've had a couple HPFP die on my 335i
Long cranks, all of that.
But if I had the choice of a 328 with no problems, or a 335i with the problems I had, I'd still take the 335i.
Just more fun :P
Otherwise, I'd get a Cayman/Boxster

N52 is a great engine, but it just lacks power for me.

the iS has HPFP problems as it's the same N54 engine

But with the newest pump and software it should (key word should) hold up well

the 933 pump held up very well in my 335i.
Push it to 330 temp
Redlines
non stop WOT
HPFP didn't even show signs of dying
Though car is gone now... dont know the long term effects of my pre-surrender driving...

From what I understand, its the DCT having lag issues.

My wife has had both a 07 335 and now a 335is and we have had zero issues with either car as far as engine issues are concerned. The is does have a little turbo lag but is far from being any issue to worry about or be annoying. The DCT also works great and is better with the sport button engaged.

Throttle lag =/= turbo lag. With peak torque at 1500, I seriously don't think you'll run into any substantial lag.

It's not substantial but it's there

It's a FI car... not a NA car anyways... why people don't see this I don't know

But at the same time, I often feel that while NA cars don't lag, you often have to rev them so freaking high to get any power that it works out to be the same

Yup very true

which is why the 335i feels 'faster' in low rpm street driving than the M3

For what it's worth, my '07 335i w/ manual transmission had horrible turbo lag. I installed a JB+ set at maximum and did the solenoid bypass and it virtually eliminated any lag. The car is now a whole lot more fun to drive.
