Autoweek photos (repeats of CAR magazine)

The blue ones are the same ones that appeared in CAR Magazine.

White one is new.

Educate me, I don't see any hint of a CF roof. As I'm sure you know CF can be painted as well, then there is no way to tell.

I don't see the CF itself, but the fact that the roof ledge (don't know if it's the right description; I mean the part where a roof rack would be mounted) and the shark fin antenna is black seems to be a strong hint. The roof itself is painted or covered to disguise the CF structure.
Scott hinted that BMW did it the same way with the M6 prototypes:

So the question left is: Will there be two versions of the roof? One with CF and one "conventional" with sunroof?

Best regards, south

I'm not saying the new M3 won't have a CF roof. I think the odds are likely it will. However, black trim and a black antenna are hardly good evidence at all of a disguised (painted) CF roof. Have there been any sightings at all of an M3 mule with an unquestionable CF roof. I don't remember.

Yeah, that's interlagos blue! It has different shades in different lighting conditions as every "modern" colour. Anyway IRL it has a purple tint which I don't like...

You're quite demanding, aren't you?
If you look at that thread you can see the black mule on the right side of the article where you can see a CF roof. The article states it's a CSL which is unlikely.
Furthermore show these pictures load tests with a car that has the same kind of disguise (painted roof and a black roof ledge); these load tests are to test the rigidity of the CF roof.

As I said is the question, what's the deal with the M3 prototypes that have a sunroof? Are both options available or did BMW decide for one solution?

Best regards, south

I knew the "real" evidence was out there, just don't remeber exactly where I had seen it. Thanks for the refresher! I personally am hoping for CF+sunroof. A bit contradictory but I like to have a sunroof and want any weight savings I can get without too much sacrifice of some "luxury" items.

Swamp and southlight are gentlemen's gentlemen. That was a good thread. I thought it was going to go south (no pun intended) when he asked for the evidence. But southlight was very mature and informed, and swamp bowed gracefully.

Great showmanship gentlemen.

I checked up the M6 press release. BMW claims that the CF roof saves as much as 4,5 kilogram. That is almost 10 lb.
I can't say how much a lightweight boot saves.

Best regards, south

Don't worry, those pics of the blue car are computer generated off of a 335i so no wide fenders.

Here's some good pics of the flared fenders - http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45172

If they offer a CF roof, I hope they at least paint it body color. You do not see F50s and Enzos running around in bare CF. That is so "Fast and the Furious" looking.

I hope they leave it the way it was in CSL and M6, it just looks awesome and in no way cheap.
Aftermarket hoods on Mitsubishis look cheap, but not a CF roof!

Best regards,
CSL

It looks cheap to me - unfinished. Begging for attention. It makes no sense to me why they would do it even on the M6. The Z06 doesn't have bare CF front fenders. Paint the whole car please, or make it an option, or standard on just the CSL, etc.

I agree with you, They should paint the CF and that way you benefit from a lightweight roof that doesnt look any different from the rest of the car !
