The thing leaked fuel like a sieve until it got up to speed, thereby heating the surfaces. The titanium panels would then expand and fill the gaps. So it usually took off with a light fuel load and then refueled in flight.

Amazing aircraft though!

Heh! Posted that before watching the first video. And they covered it!

Oh man... I was obsessed with this plane when I was a kid.

I must have had every book available on it up until the age of 16.

When you start digging and really finding out what this aircraft was capable of (even back in the 80's) it really kind of freaks you out and makes you wonder what the planes of today can do.

One thing that wasn't mentioned was the tires...

See how they're white? Impregnated with titanium to keep them from melting.

That way when you go on a combat mission, you have no reason to come back.

To prevent defection maybe?

Not really applicable now.

Interesting facts. The engines are started by a 'Jump Cart' which comprises two big block Chevy engines and is rolled into place to start each engine, one at a time.

The external titanium skin expands at supersonic speeds so much, that the skin of some surfaces is corrugated and when on the ground, the SR-71 leaks fuel as it is used as a coolant under the surfaces. The aircraft has to be refuelled right after take off.

Los Angeles to DC in 64 minutes.

They have one on display at the Smithsonian out at Dulles. I took some pics.

What's even more ridiculous is that this bird had been in service for the better part of two decades by the time 1980 came around. Now that's scary shit.

I'm pretty sure my head would explode if I knew what we were up to these days.
