Losing the faith in BMW and my 335i
I am beginning to lose faith in BMW. I've been a firm believer since I brought my first BMW a 1997 E36 M3. To this day that M3 is the best car I have ever owned. That M3 was bulletproof until the syncro-gears started to fade at 150k miles.
Recently I bought a CPO 2007 E92 335i thinking it was $15k~$20k cheaper and also potentially faster then what I really wanted a E92 M3. After buying it I was certain I had made the right choice despite of the notorious HPFP failures I have read about on the forums. At first I was not to impressed with it's off-the-line speed, I was feeling it was suffering some turbo lag. After reading about a BMW service bulletin (TSB) and a firmware update I asked my SA about, he denied knowing about it and would NOT update the firmware until I printed out the TSB. After much teeth pulling the firmware are updated and car felt quicker (but with more wastegate noise). For a while all was good. One morning after depressing the ignition button the car had difficulty sustaining an idle; and then the engine malfunction screen appeared followed by the engine fan going full speed. This has happened six times now and each time I was able to turn off the ignition and restart with no problem after a few minutes. There is no long crank, and the idle fluctuates between 400~1100 RPM but mostly sits around 600. I brought it in for service and the had it for 5 days. They said my firmware was up to date, the replaced all six sparkplugs and all six fuel injectors. The next day after I got it back it happens again. It's back at the shop now. They said it's not the HPFP. Anyone see this before? Check out the video. It takes about 3 sec before I can pull out my iPhone and start recording. You can hear the "ding" when the engine malfunction light turns on later followed but the angry fan. After I fumble to pull the hood release you can really hear the fan roar. Let me know what you think... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q-WvQbzQDY [u2b][/u2b]

IF your car isn't under the power train warranty tell them your car failed your state inspection for a high idle & engine check light. That will also make them fix it for free under the emissions warranty.
There is no telling what it is without reading the fault codes. |

obviously shove the video in their face and tell them to fix it. tell them that you are insulted that they dont believe you and dont take no for an answer. call bmw directly if you have to, stealerships are hit or miss.

Actually, what sucks more is how BMW is dealing with this problem, not that the problem exists. This whole head in the sand approach just does not bode well for a brand we've been loyal too.

Yes, the car is currently still with local BMW dealer. They are running more test. The car has full CPO warranty, no issues there. My concern along with all that I have read here is that the Twin Turbo cars are constantly failing. If anything I'm just venting that the company I have trusted for so many years is screwing up big time. I'm no engineer, but how had is it to make a HPFP that can work with the twin? Seems like after so many revisions of the HPFPs they still have not gotten it right. After so many updates of the firmware issues persist with the ECU. They just doesn't seem to be an end in site. When it's not in the shop I love this car, but sometimes I feel like I have a lemon.

People with HPFP & wastegate problems need to call this attorney -- they've already started 2 lawsuits in Arkansas and mine in California, but they need more steam to build up a class action:

Sorry to hear....
The car co. as a whole s****. Yes, there ARE some good dealerships, many piss poor. I do love the way BMW's drive. I am a fanboy. But being a fanboy doesn't mean I like being treated second class when I have a full factory warranty and am the original owner... My wife's co. has a corp discount on Nissan/Infiniti, gee, I wonder what car will go in the garage next? LOL And I was one of the fanboys who vehemently defended the 335 over the then G35 and next G37. Ask a G37 owner how many times they were dead on the side of the road like Bob Weir's uncle... |

My SA just called, he said that BMWNA diagnosed a failure in the HPFP. He said I'll get my car back on Thursday.

Thanks. People use to joke about Harley's being unreliable, but my bike runs like a champ and my BMW has issues.

Just from your description of the problem a few members here already correctly diagnosed the issue (hpfp) and it took the dealer several days to find out. Either they have a bunch of morons working there or they were looking for ways to turn down your warranty. You would think that if they work on BMWs day in and day out that they have a pretty good idea wtf is wrong with these 335s.

I don't think people on this forum are willing to accept that the HPFP is not truly the root cause. How do you explain 4 pumps on one car, each with a different part number, with the latest being refurbed?
It's like putting a new light bulb in the socket, and it blows. Putting a 2, 3, 4th bulb in, each blows. Maybe at some point you look for another problem and realize the bulb blowing is only the symptom? this forum has become, "my seatbelt doesn't retract anymore." "it's the HPFP, we've all told you so." |

I came from an 08 G which wouldn't drive straight. Gs also don't come in the AWD and 6MT configuration. That MT wasn't better compared to the 3's gear box either. Much worse than the 03 6MT Maxima. These car companies are all going down hill.

I had a G35 6MT sedan and had no major problems with it in three years. Granted my 335i is faster, handles better, brakes better, and has a better gearbox but it has gone through 3 HPFPs in 12K miles, had an L7 stereo that would not turn on no matter what and constantly gets bubbled or blown tires. I can't imagine this car lasting me as long as my G would have if I hadn't returned it after the lease expired. I'm starting to regret buying my 335i especially after getting rear ended twice.
