Hit a deer

6500 miles on.

It was late, dark, raining, foggy, all that nonsense.. And still I *almost* veered to miss it.. but not quite enough. I wound up getting really lucky - nothing metal was damaged, just the bumper, cowling/fender underpanel, and & foglight assembly were impacted.

Still..

Deer: dangerous, malicious vermin.

Next time I let the guy with the Civic go first.

Hit a suicidal deer in a 93 Buick skylark. I swore I swerved 3 times and somehow he got back in front of me.

Time for a new bumper on insurance company?

I've got pics but so far I've been too depressed to pull them off the camera.

mithiral: estimate for fixing all that at a decent shop with all new bmw parts only came to $1200 so I'm not even going to bother with the insurance. After the deductible & probable rate hike I figure I'm better off just dealing with it.

Yeah, I'd say you got off easy, $1200 in rrepsir costs is nothing. It still sucks, but the car could have been totaled and you could have had a deer on your lap.

I ran over a dead dear a week ago. I drove to the CVS up the street from work and the deer wasn't there. On my way back, tho, I'm following an Accord and we're both going about 50 (in a 45MPH zone) and I have a fool in an Explorer tailgaiting me (only one lane each way and there was oncoming traffic so he couldn't pass).

Anywho, the Accord just drove right over the deer and I didn't have time to brake and swerving into oncoming traffic would've caused a head-on collision so I just ran over the damned thing. It didn't mess up my bumper, but it did scrape all the way down the bottom of my car. The smell of burned flesh and hair stayed on my car for a few days.

andrew: Agreed, I got really lucky. She (just going on the numbers) decided to reverse course at the last second and wound up ducking or something, hit the car really low. Sorry about your head, deer, but thanks for not getting all up into my business.

nogard: It's crazy around here this time of year. They're out at unusual times and in places you don't usually see them. Glad you managed to avoid damage.

Deerstrikes fall under the comprehensive portion of your policy and will not (repeat not) increase your rates. If your deductible is under the cost then go with insurance.

If your estimate is $1200 then the final bill will be nearer $2k.

State insurance laws preclude rate hikes for comp claims. Comp claims are things out of your control - glass, theft, fire, wildlife etc.

My sister once hit two deer at once -- one with each side of the front bumper. Didn't do too much damage to her car though. Not sure about damage to the deer.

Fortunately the car was just an old Ford Tempo anyway.

Well if you bothered to stay at the scene and report it, you would be deemed not at fault in which case there is no deductible or rate hike. You pay for insurance, use it.
