BMW just called me about a recall. Please read.

This morning I recieved a phone call from my dealership. Apparently there is some sore of "recall" on some of the ignition related components on N54s. I put the word recall in quotations because it doesn't seem like they are making it an official recall the way they did with the V8s and V12s.The girl was very nice and explained to me that it can sometime take a bit longer for the car to turn over. It sounded like she was talking about HPFP long cranks. She said that it would just require a reprograming and would take about an hour and a half. So, i made an appointment for Saturday morning.
Now, I've heard about people getting a HPFP failure, and being told that the car needed a reprogramming AFTER they went in. I can't say I've heard of anyone being contacted by their dealership to get this taken care of.
Does anyone know about this?

Sounds like the dealer is being proactive to get paid for their labor and work...they probably really don't care about your HPFP. Sounds like a sales revenue generator. I assume you bought the car from them and they have your info? They are probably just going through the DB of owners they sold this model to and trying to drum up business.

If it's not a warranty issue which requires a failed HPFP, they won't get paid by BMW so it doesn't make sense they are just "trying to drum up business".

Not everything revolves around a failing HPFP....many things are covered under warranty. In fact everything is included in the new car warranty. So if there is in fact a fault with any of the components of your vehicle, then it's covered unless YOU altered it and your modifications caused the fault. Did you even know you had a warranty or what it is?

Of course they get paid by BMW. BMW pays dealers to do BMW mandated software updates.

Can you find out more about this "recall"? I'd want to know the specifics before I get my car reprogrammed.

It is the DME update that's been kicking around for about a month. In addition to minor software updates, the primary purpose appears to be priming the fuel pump earlier (starting when you unlock or open the door) to reduce HPFP failures.

However, while the symptoms may go away for a while, it won't fix an already failing pump - it may just keep a good pump from failing.

Reports are mixed. Some say that there is less turbo lag after this update - some say there is more.

This is not a recall.

I thought that the fuel pump gets primed now, the way the engine is currently?

This is not a "RECALL." You will be notified by mail of any "RECALLS" & advised to contact your dealer for an appointment to correct the problem.

It's an open campaign for the DME programming for the HPFP priming primarily. It's based on model years and production dates. However when I took my car in Monday for a half power light, vaccum tank/hose issue and asked about it I had to basically beg them to check on it as the key fob did not register any need but I fall well within the production dates. I think the TSB is 13-10-09 or 13-09-10. Good luck when I get mine back, if they updated, I'll post the feeling/lag et al as I have original software from 1/08 build.

Mine was updated last week. Car appears to drive better but they also replaced the exhaust flap cause it was loose and causing a rattling. So it could be either, or all in my head.

As promised posting up the results of the software update. Got car back last night, they had it for 3 days, one to fix the vacuum tank which caused the engine malfunction light and the other two to get the ok from BMWNA to recode and the update. Car dirves a lot differently, like I said earlier I have a 01/08 build with the original loaded software, never had an HPFP issue so no need for any other versions, car starts same as it did before, right away, feels a lot smoother though when driving. Before it was abit of a beast to drive smoothly on light throttle and when you pushed it was instant on. Now a lot more linear feel, the perception is you are not moving anywhere near as fast but when you look down at the speedo your going along just as fast. Side effects they reset everything, all the preferences were reset so I had to go thru the stalk(no nav/idrive) and reset all those, bluetooth calls are very low or quiet for some reason, not sure why and if anyone has an answer offer that up. Basically nothing to fear, car is fine, no increased lag. I only have about 40 miles on the car so let me thrash it a bit and get it to adapt.
