bmw property tax

Since I live in Virginia I have to pay to property tax every year on my cars. I also own a nissan maxima and a murano, the property taxes for those two are 100 and 200 bucks respectively (nothing to get upset about).

When I woke up this morning and checked my e-mail I almost fell off my chair. Got an e-mail from BMW financial saying that I owe over 2K in property taxes. Is this normal for a car like that? I've never taken this cost into consideration when buying this car. It's pretty much extra $166 per month. This is crazy, did they put a comma in the wrong place, wtf.....

Is this in addition to your taxes for your vehicle license plates? If so that's nuts!

Let's do the math.

Alexandria charges $4.57 for every $100 of assessed value. Here's the formula: (assessed value / 100) x 4.57 = $2,000 (the amount you owe in taxes).

So ((AV/100)x4.57)/4.75=2000/4.75
AV/100=421.05
(AV/100)x100=421.05 x 100
AV=$42,105

Does that sound about right? Do you think the Blue Book value of your BMW is around $42K? It certainly sounds like it's a reasonable assessment, especially if you drive a 335i or a 328i with a few option packages.

BTW, I know how you feel because I lived in Alexandria, VA for 6.5 years. I normally had an exception, tho (as in my property tax would be $700 but I'd only have to pay $200). I don't know why, but my bill always had a big deduction on it.

We have that in Maine - it is called Excise Tax. Complete and utter rip off here - it is based off the MSRP on the Monroney Sticker (which must be presented) and not what you actually paid.

Since the OP's BMW is an '09 model, he should ask for a reassessment. Or, since he didn't complain last year, perhaps this bill is for 2 years. And did he sign an escrow agreement so that BMWFS would pay it? If so, that should have been clearly explained.

So you had agreed to an escrow account. Doesn't that include at least a copy of the tax bill? Since I've always felt tax/insurance escrows benefit the bank, not the consumer, I avoid them when at all possible - and it sounds like you need to find out how and why the $166/mo is calculated.

Yes, then you can pay 6.2% of the value of the car when you move. If it's leased, you still get billed for pers property tax, but it's not much.
Also if you lease, you get to pay tax on the purchase price of the car, not on the monthly payments.

And we don't have a state income tax either
