Oil Consumption
I have a 2007 335i coupe that I purchased new. I have never had any oil issues meaning that I that oil light had never came on telling me to add a quart. I have the oiled changed every 5-6k. Well starting this past May I have had the add oil light +1 quart come on 4 times last time being 3 weeks ago. I have stopped by the dealer each time to get topped off. I have put roughly 2k on the car from May till Sept. I don't drive to far from home to work. I just turned 27k on the car today. I check the oil and the computer came back and told me it was ok and had the level at halfway between min and max. I then thought well 3 weeks ago it was at max and now it is at the halfway mark. I found that odd so I decided to make a stop at the dealer this morning. I talked with the service manager and explained to him my issue with just adding a quart roughly 4 months in a row. That I think there might be a leak or something going on with it. He stated he would like to drain the oil out of it and measure it. I left the car there and came back later to pick it up. I talked with him and he showed me where the oil level is on a sketch. He had is showing basically just below 3/4 mark. Meaning that from 3 weeks ago when it was at max it has since gone down to just below 3/4. He decided it would be better to not add any at this point and wait for the light to come on. Then we can go from there to see what fix might be needed. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this type of a issue involving oil consumption? Thanks

All i can say is that my Audi A4 used to burn oil at 26k and that was normal. my 07 335i with 40k does not burn any oil in 6-7k. I dont know the cause of oil burning...

That's not bad. I burn a gallon of oil every 30 miles.

My 2007 between 33K and 48K miles.
During the 15K oil change interval, it needed a +1 about every 1.5 months between the 11-15K miles after the initial oil change. So it began burning it in the last 4k roughly a quart a month and half. |

Yeah but your mom's 9 year old Honda Accord only has 8hp and never gets driven hard. I don't think the OP has anything to worry about.

Normally these are very tight motors
Normally these are very tight motors.
People would be coming in a lot for top off with the 18k interval otherwise. |

@JO2 idk, i'm still a little shocked about the oil needed to be topped off that often. No wonder BMW integrated it into the dashboard :P
I thought topping oil off was just for really old cars |

So you are using a quart every 500 miles when the car is 25,000 miles old? Up til now, you have used less than a quart every 5-6000 miles so suddenly you are using more than 10 times as much oil.
Not right at all.

It is normal to use "some oil" some manufactures will even state this in the owners manual, I know Acura did in the manual for my 2000 Type R.

@johnnydad that is exactly what happen. Everything was fine never have to be topped off till the 25k mark since then I have made visits to the dealer to get it topped off when the computer stated I was a quart low. My service manager stated he would like to monitor it more closely. Basically told me once we have it on paper that it us using 1 quart roughly every 500-700 miles he can then go to higher ups at BMW to get permission to look further into it. As for driving it hard I don't feel as though I drive the car that hard. I drive it basically to work and home. During that drive i'm hit with rush hour city traffic and then 4 miles of interstate driving at roughly 60 mph. I just find it odd that from 0-25k I never even knew the oil light existed and now (27k) I find myself looking for it each month to get it topped off. I wasn't sure if anyone else had any issue similar to this.

Basically you are not supposed to carry oil in your trunk.....your car can burn oil, but it shouldn't be enough to trigger the light and hit minimum mark...at least in 6-7k it shouldn't. Just make sure at at oil changes it sits at maximum reading. |

was there any resolution to this? 3K miles ago I had to add a quart due to low oil level and now its tellling me I need to add another quart. Seems a bit high for only 3K miles of driving. I'm too lazy to wait an hour at the dealership to top off and rather just buy an 8dollar quart to top off...

Jack your car up , take the under body shields off and check for your self to make sure it might be a seal.

Start a log, the more detailed the better. Mileage when oil was added, how much, what kind. Serious warranty work is going to need solid documentation.
