BMW's Prius Killer - the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition - 65 mpg

BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition – First Look

Quote:
The BMW 3 Series diesel range was made complete in 2009 with the introduction of the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition at the 63rd Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt. At that time, BMW already had three diesels in the 3 Series, namely the 316d (115 hp), the 318d (143 hp), and the “normal” 320d (184 hp).

Alongside the breathtaking BMW Vision EfficientDynamics (a three-cylinder diesel-electric hybrid show car), the 163-hp BMW 320d EDE was one of the stars of the Frankfurt show, in part thanks to the fact that it uses only 3.6 l/100 km (65 mpg) in highway driving.

1000+ miles between fill-ups is pretty awesome.

One has to make a choice between maximum fuel consumption and fun.

I don't call 0-60 mph in 8 seconds, fun.

I would never purchase such a vehicle.

My 328i does 0-60 in about 6.8 seconds and that's much too slow.

I drove one of those at a BMW event (320d Efficient Dynamics Edition). I think it would give the 328i a run for it's money, it has 380Nm of torque, compared to the 280Nm of the 328i.

It's plenty powerful.

So your 328 has the same straight line speed as the 68 Chevelle SS (one of the fastest cars of the time)

The Miata has a 0-60 time of about 8 seconds - and that is a fun car to drive.

There is so much more to a car that 0-60 times.

By the way, the Prius is over 10 seconds and the 1953 Corvette had a 0-60 time of a "quick" 11 seconds.

I'd bet you'd trade your 328 for a 53 'vette.

Prius are like Rockport shoes, they fit a certain demographic. In no way is the 320d a Prius killer! If you look at this forum, BMW owners don't care all that much about money. I would say Prius drivers are the total opposite. How many Prius would be leased? Probably not many, and it takes years to recoup the outlay. BMW drivers often could care less about leasing one car after the other, at least in the USA.

Of course it is - by virtue of the fuel economy.

Given that the Prius is more expensive that equivalent petrol autos in its class, I would strongly disagree with the statement that implies Prius owners DO care about money. Some certainly do but that statement is just about as accurate as saying BMW owners don't care (which also isn't true).

execute the Prius, bring this car to the US.

The only problem with it is that it looks like a normal car, all the retards who buy a Prius want the smug cloud over them that is supplied by driving a hideous box of crap, and everybody knows that they are 'green'

Brilliant car, this, it's just too bad we don't have it in the US. And for those people claiming it's too slow, 8 seconds 0-60 is about par for the course for most family sedans. But most family sedans don't handle like a BMW, and get 65mpg.

it may take 8 seconds to get to 60 but how often do you launch off the line. Once you get that torque band it moves and it will feel very fast and also very fun. Also it will be very quick on the highway with a good amount of passing power. Also since it is a BMW it will have the same driving dynamics, which means it will handle well and you will be happy. As much as i love my 335d, its overkill and i could go for something w/ a little less oomph.

This. But I would also like to see the 330d come to the US as well, It slots in between the 320d and 335d both in terms of fuel efficiency and acceleration.

They're not marketing to you then If I was considering getting a family car for the kids to drive or something, a 320d would be considered.

Unfortunately, while the sales of the 335d have been excellent in terms of comparative sales (see Diesel Economics 200: 40% Take Rate for 2010), the numbers wouldn´t justify three diesels in the 3er Reihe quite yet, let alone two.

The next diesel to arrive will probably be the 535d (see report here) and possibly the X3 or X1 (the latter is a surmisal on my part, a diesel 5er is pretty much a sure thing).

Toyota is the pioneer in hybrid technology. Nobody leases a Prius, because they aren't out to simply have it for the sake of having. Many people lease BMWs. It's not likely that tax credits will ever disappear on BMWs because they aren't able to sell enough units for that to happen. there aren't any credits on Toyota hybrids yet they continue to sell.

The break-even on a Prius isn't any time soon with fuel in my neighborhood at $2.379 for regular. Yet people in my neighborhood have Prius. It implies that people in my neighborhood are old, and yes, they are. The property tax is a serious barrier to entry.

6.8, 8.0? Meh, its a road car.

Besides which the torque delivery makes these more responsive in day to day running. And you can easily chip most modern turbo diesels to produce rather more go.

Given how advanced other technologies have become it really is peverse that were are driving around in cars weighing 1500kg getting less than 30mpg. USA's fuel prices and taxes make this of no consequence to you, but for most of the rest of the world the petrol 6's make less and less sense.
