Feedback Please - Crank Bolt just came loose...
Okay fellas::
Drove about 80 miles came out of the gym had the TPMS Sensor low lamp on...found a screw in the tire decided the tire definitely needed to be replaced. Drove the car about a mile to the dealership left the key for after hours (car was still running fine at this point). Swung by the dealership the next morning saw my SA and tech (sitting in my car with it running) explained that the tire needed to be replaced and the door needed to be re-secured. Received a call from my SA saying "well the tires all done but now the car wont start". So they threw it up in the air pulled things apart found the crank shaft bolt completely loose! Pulled it right out. Yes the Crank shaft bolt that is behind the dampener pulley. The pulley slides right over the bolt (I'd assume its designed that way on purpose) Now the blame game begins. The Tech removed the valve cover... rockers are all broken, one piston has a HOLE IN IT, and there are metal shavings in the cylinders. The diagnosis is that I will need a new motor. JUST DANDY ISNT IT? Thoughts? Advice? Fishy story? Last edited by MusclezMarinara; 09-30-2010 at 09:14 AM.. |

The, "THE?" crankshaft bolt? Are you refering to the bolt that holds on the balancer pulley or the bolts that go across the saddles at the main bearings? and no, what would a tire change have to do with any bolt or nut coming loose? (except, of course, the nut behind the steering wheel, and the lugs.) If BMWs began losing bolts by being turned on, shut off, and then turned on again, and shut off, I think we would have more trouble than just being totally confused.

Small front end collision
the dampener was scuffed and the dampener was changed shop that did the work states that bolt was not touched i even saw it and it def wasn't touched this isn't their first rodeo. The pulley is right there at the lowest part on the motor. |

I don't think that was "minor front end damage", and that would have been helpful info in the original post.
I know of no way of getting the damper off if you don't remove the crank pulley & bolt. |

Never heard of a crank pulley bolt coming undone. The M3 was a solid beast of an engine. Besides some VANOS failures, which is common amongst all of them... Gotta stay tuned to this one....something isn't right.

This is why I will not buy any used car from the East Coast. "Small front end collision." LOL!

Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

well the rockers all broke and the hole in the piston tells me the little sproket on the crank at the bottom of the timing chain probably got messed up somehow seeing as you have a balancer pulley problem and when the timing chain slipped a (few) teeth that caused the cam to rocker problem. The hole in the piston is from an exhaust valve hitting it because it was open when it shouldn't have been.
Another cause could have been they ran it with the balancer pulley just sitting there with the crank spinning behind it and holy crap that would imbalance a motor causing the above scenario as well... vibrate to hell, jump a tooth yada yada yada.... Just guessin, but thats how the stuff fits together. Usually when your in an accident, the damage (if any mechanically) is done to the gears in the tranny from an abrupt stop and I'm not familiar enough with BMW to know if the clutch and all can lockup and cause that kind of junk in the engine from abrupt stopping but on most cars it wouldn't cause an issue. the engine would just stop. the clutch or torque convertor would take up the slop from the jolt and you would be fine "engine wise". and Im also "subscribed" to this. I gotta hear how this one turns out. |

Sorry but uh... I see missing metal components, radiator supports, front frame rails, etc.. is that all plastic and not metal on the E90? All of that had to come off for a reason; if it was JUST plastic damage then they would just pull the old bumper cover off and replace it, not the front clip of the car.. Congrats on getting it fixed; they didn't issue it a salvage title did they? /shrug
