Any articles/ranking about BMW saftey?
I found this, but no mention of BMW.
http://www.inautonews.com/safest-cars-2010 I am looking for some sort of ranking by class or so. More specifically, I am trying to see how BMW ranks against Audi. A couple of friends have been saying that Audi the "safest car on the market" , as a BMW fan, I am trying to find some literature about this. Thanks skimo |

In my opinion, as long as it's not Chinese or Indian it's safe enough. Sure Volvo can design a car to be great in a pre-planned test situation. If you know what's on the test it's easy to study. In the real world I think it's a bit more up to luck.

honestly, the only reviews i need to read are the threads made from E9x drivers after they've been in a bad accident and they say how they walked away without a scratch. That's enough for me.

If it's you time to die it's your time to die no matter what you are driving.

.....I also understand that no 2 accidents can be fully reproduced with every contributing factor. Every accident is different. The truth is that even the safest Volvo in the world can still be involved in a fatal accident. From what i'v seen so far, BMW makes pretty safe cars.

I always look here:
http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/co...=3&sort=medPay Insurance losses. I sort by medical claims to see which cars have the least serious claims for medical injuries, etc. Not a perfect test but helpful/ |

Well you can count me in as a believer. Drunk driver pulled out in front of me from side road never saw him I was going 45-50 took out front end of car two weeks after I bought it. Some whiplash and airbag burn on wrist. Any lesser of a car and story would be different.

In my opinion you are an idiot because Volvo is owned by Chinese. Get your fact straight.

For the best safety information available, go to informedforlife.org.
They take crash test data from the IIHS and NHSTA, weight the performance based on what types of accidents are most dangerous, and adjust the score for vehicle weight. An "average" car is one that receives a score of 100 and weighs 3300 pounds, which was the median back in 2005. The Audi A4 is the second best car out there by this method, with a score of 42. The 3 is still in the top 17%, with a score of 64 for the 4-door. It was released a few years before the current A4 though. When it was released in 06, the 3 was in the top 6% of all cars. Safety is improving fast. Informedforlife recommends you select cars that score at least 65. The top scoring volvo is the XC90, iwth a score of 51. That is solid as hell for impacts, since it's rollover rating isn't so hot, being a top-heavy SUV. The S80 gets 55, and S40 a 63- no better than the 3, really. The worst score from 2003 to 2011 is the 2003 Dodge Dakota, at 195. What you have to be really careful of when reading these though is, in the case of missing data, they calculate the score by filling in the blanks for the average of cars in that catagory. So, sometimes you'll see dramatically different scores for the sedan and wagon version of a car because only the sedan was crash tested. In reality, the wagon should have a slightly higher rollover risk, and maybe slightly worse rear impact score (which doesn't matter- only 1% of fatalities are from being rear-ended), but otherwise be identical. Use your judgement. Last edited by carve; 10-01-2010 at 06:16 PM.. |

Any German car is safe. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW (from the Golf up in size). Volvo's and SAABs also tend to be very safe cars.
Nowadays, with safety such a big deal, most new cars out from any large volume developed nation manufacturer are safe. Are BMWs very safe? Yes, always have been. It's the bonus to the handling, the powertrain and the design. A true complete package. And part of the reason why I chose a BMW.
