Unhappy Windows roll back down on their own

When I use the "all up" switch to bring them up, often (20%?) one or both of the front windows will roll back down after nearly reaching the top. This happens with top up or down. It's very annoying and embarassing.

Anyone seen or heard of this before? There a fix? The dealership is baffled.

It's a known issue

has to do with you being on an unbalanced road/surface

That's what they told me

my SmartTop fixed this before :P
funny how an aftermarket mod fixes it heh

That just shows how ignorant some dealers are and how some people believe that an aftermarket solution will resolve a non-existing problem.

If the windows sometimes reverse on their own then the issue most likely is the anti-pinch requiring adjustment. You can adjust it by manually running your windows up and down a few times so the system can learn where the proper position is.

It is also possible that some debris is causing the system to reverse - just like your garage door reverses when it thinks that there is something blocking the way.

BTW Smartop probably deactivates anti-pinch so - while it may "resolve" that problem, may be dangerous.

Actually, you're wrong. (the debris etc can be the case, but it wouldn't really hold valid, at least in my case; and if it did, then it's a fault in BMW's design that it would continue to occur and get debris in it nonstop)

When I first got the car, I was so annoyed by it, that I forced them to check it a thousand times.

They ended up changing almost everything from the window, to the mechanics inside, to the seals in the roof (or whatever they're called that the window latches onto)

they couldn't get rid of it

they though I was BSing, but when I had video proof along with taking the Service manager on a test drive and showing him first hand, they really had no choice.

but even after all that it still continued to happen.

I searched online (here and elsewhere) and it's a common problem on the e93
and some other convertibles too (I remember my boxster used to do it, but Porsche was able to repair it and it didn't happen again)

And you're wrong on the SmartTop part; the reason it fixes the issue seems very simple:
on the e93, the large one window button will open all the windows with one click, but you need to hold it to close. the SmartTop has a feature where you can close all windows with one click. That is (from what makes sense to me) what fixed the issue.

I even showed my SmartTop to my dealer and they loved the idea and were baffled that it fixed my window issue while all their work and effort failed.

Mine does this....

1. It has only done it when it's raining/wet.

2. I have always been on a flat surface when it has happened...

3. I'm not concerned about this as much as I am the damn streaks that are happening when I roll my windows up

What's that? Do you mean the car isn't level?

I'm not clear why you say he is wrong. You're describing how the driver activates the feature and he was telling you why the windows don't reverse.

Don't worry about it - Persian just wants to be right. Let him be.

Both of his "you're wrong" statements don't actually say anything different but that's OK.

It is pretty well documented that the anti-pinch is the issue - at least for coupes, sedans and wagons.

The only reason for the windows to reverse is if the anti-pinch thought there was something blocking the window from going up.

Ahhh well.

Oh...ok...in that case...Persian you are correct! I especially think you were correct to show the dealership your SmartTop which bypasses the safety features of the vehicle.

SmartTop does not bypass the anti-pinch feature of the windows.

I had this problem on my 2007 E93 335 and have it again on my 2011 E93 335is. It's a bit annoying, but since its a known issue w/o a specific fix I've never brought it up to my dealer. I haven't been able to discern any specific condition or action that causes it.

SmartTOP is a after market add-on for convertibles that gives you additional control/features.

I have a similar issue w/my '09 M-Sport couple. However, for me it seems to only happen when I hit auto-up and then turn the ignition off before the window(s) finish rolling all the way up. I do this everyday pulling into my spot at work. About 5% of the time, the window will immediately reverse direction as soon as I turn the ignition off.

I had them look at it when I took it in for my first service and miraculously they were able to reproduce it (I thought for sure they would claim it was unreproducible). They told me they weren't sure what the problem was and rebooted/recycled/reset whatever the computer. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem - fortunately it is not the end of the world.

On the other hand, every once in a while my sunroof will refuse to close. It will get 99% closed, and then reverse direction. I've sat there playing with it for 30 min before trying to get it to close. Then, after some arbitrary amount of time, it would work. They told me they also reset that system too but I'm afraid to use it now for fear that I won't be able to get it closed. LAME.

This is why BMW needs to include the sunroof manual close tool in the tool kits. I find it ridiculous that I had to buy it to fill a blank spot in the car. You can manually close the sunroof with it in case something like this ever happens.

Yeah they explained that to me. They also showed me how to manually reset it if it happens again. Apparently you hold the button "up" (towards the sky, as if you're going to tilt it open) for 30 seconds or so and then it will start opening. Keep holding it until it completes the entire cycle including tilt and all. When it's done it's reset. LAME.

Well they also knew about my FMIC, Catless DPs, BOV, DCI, JB3 later too.

Which safety feature though?

Being able to close the windows with one touch of a button?
Being able to open/close the top with 1 touch of the button?

Other convertibles can do it, so how does that make it unsafe?
If you mean driving at 20mph and doing it... well yeah, that's just being retarded.
5mph I beg to differ though.

Not only can you do that reset procedure, but in case the electronics completely go on a fritz you can use the tool (it's an angled hex wrench) to physically close it. I would recommend it to anyone with a sunroof.
