Update #4 (29-Mar-07)

By Kujo..............

Just got off the phone with Raffy.

WE will be getting phone calls in the next week or two for payment.
The units are IN PRODUCTION.
They first batch of units will probably not fill the full amount of folks on the list though. There are alot of guys on the list and they probably will not get enough units to complete it, first time around.
He's not sure about that though, so don't everyone get your panties in a bunch just yet.

He thinks that the units will be shipped to the States by the end of April and we should have them all by the first week of May.

This is the update as it stands today, 3.29.07 at 2:53PST

If it truely is only another 5 weeks, I'll wait it out for the discounted price.

I'm going to contact him again in 2 weeks and hope things are moving forward with payments and what not, otherwise, TMS might be getting my cash.. ;- )

So, that's about it, at the moment.

Update #3 (08-Mar-07):

Quaife will be contacting all those who phoned and placed an order with them next week for deposits. The 335i differential is expected to start shipping within the next 4-6 weeks.

There will be documentation and tip that come with the unit.

There might be a longer waiting list for those who have not order as demand was high.

Orb

Update #2 (13-Feb-07):

There are currently 19 people on the Quaife. Quaife is currently working on the project and will have formal quotes ready for you all before February 28th or sooner. Be patient as this is going very well and everything that is required to make this project happen is in place.

The delivery date will not be 5-7 months and is still projected at 14 weeks maximum as stated by the company to me today. The delivery date will depend on what work needs to be done. In the best case the delivery date could be less than 8 weeks but it not worth discussing until the facts are know so please let’s not speculate and wait for the quote.

For those who wish to still order please do so up until the final quote as this will help reduce the cost further.

Contact info:

Project: BMW 335i/330i
Contact: Harley or Rafael
Company: Autotech Sports Tuning
Phone: 1 949 240-4000

I will update you all in when the quote is officially ready or you will be contacted by Quaife.

Update #1 (27-Jan-07):

I spoke with Quaife and they will go ahead with this project as long as we have at least 15+ people committed.

There are a few details I can let you know about immediately:

1. The cost will be about 1495.00 USD which comes with a lifetime warranty.
2. Biasing will be custom set for each application. E90 325i/330i will have a specific biasing as with E90/E92 335i. Special biasing for 335i with XEDE will be available if it actually needed.
3. The delivery time is estimated at 12-14 weeks at the moment. The delivery time might be considerably less as thing move ahead but at the moment this time frame stands.

The next stage for Quaife is to define the scope of work. The first thing they need is information on the differntal either by purchasing the units or by having a customer provide them a sample. I would like to ask if anyone with 330i and 335i, who lives close to San Juan Capistrano in California, that would be willing to leave their car at Quaife for 2 days so it can be used to measured from. In return, you will receive the very first installed unit at no cost and will also substantially reduce the delivery date. Anyone, who interested please private message me.

I will follow up with you all early next week on the next step which will be a proper quotation and ordering details.

My background is in mechanical engineering who works primarily on new product development so if you have a specific questions I will try to answer them.

Original Post:

This thread is to get a list of 15+ interested people in buying a Quaife torque biasing differential for E92 335i. It seem possible this may work with a E90 330as well but it is not confirmed.

As many of you have researched, this type of differential is really the only possible solution at the moment that will be fully compatible (DSC) and relatively easy to design for this application.

The design requirements are as follows:

• Drop in replacement (no modification to the housing)
• Gearing and biasing control parameter will be set by Quaife and will be conservative so it is right the first time.
• Stock gearing will be used (no ratio change and $ saved).
• Cost: Under 2000.00 USD

If you are seriously interested and are willing to commit to an order within the next 6-8 weeks please post to this thread. I will follow up with a post once their there is enough parities interested and have discussed this project with the vendor in more detail.

Please do not post comments retaining to what type of LSD is better or the need for one. Just start a new thread.

Just take it off before you return the car.

Those usually sell for around $1300. I am sure you will pay the premium above that being BMW owners and all. The install is expensive and pain in the a$$.

Quaife is pretty much the best dedicated LSD manufacturer out there and is very well respected in the aftermarket community. They do not usually release parts without taking the specifics of each car into consideration.

Personally that would be on my list to purchase right after wheels, coilovers, exhaust and ECU. This will take a 335 from being a one legged cowboy in an ass kicking contest to a real road warior. :rocks:

All the E90s (E90, E91, E92, E93) share the same differential housing; this quaife should fit in any of the E90 variations.

We would need a really competent installer though; this is FAR from a DIY, its more like rebuilding a transmission. (The LSD unit goes inside your stock differential)

Put me down tentatively:

That's a great price. Is the final drive ratio the same or is it available with different choices?

Yeah, plus you need to find someone qualified to install this as well and there is a cost to that. There is also a cost to removing the diff, shipping the diff, getting the diff back, installing the new diff...

So your $2000 diff now just cost you $3000...

Quaife rocks. It would be nice if we could arrange a group install too. A few central locations, save on shipping and install.

It would be the same, if you used your stock differential.

Τhat's the thread I 've been waiting for in order to make up my mind on buying that car.
The answer is now a big yes, but my schedule is a little off-time for the initial group ordering, since I plan to have the car roughly by the end of this year.

I was dealing with Mike at Technik, who isn't running the show there anymore, about doing an LSD in my e46 ZHP.
His tech there is amazing and he told me Joe(I forget his name actually) could easily install my LSD into my stock DIFF/Gears.
I'll get in touch with him and see if that is still the case.
That could cover the LA/So Cal portion of the buy.

I hope this plays out.
I'd have no problem at all, dropping 2,500-3K or so on the installed unit.

Hope it pans out.

And the guy at Technik, "Joe", is probably actually Zolti. Great guy. =)

I wish I could afford this, it'd make my drift endeavors more fun!

OK, I'm not living in the USA. But if I order a drexler lsd I HAVE TO send them an open diff(or my own diff which means I cannot drive the damn car for about 3/4 weeks) and they are going to rebuild the diff I sent them.

What about Quaife?

To answer a few questions:

1. The cost is estimated figure and will likely be lower but depends on how many people are interested. In short, not enough want this then there will be nothing. I am going to do my best so it does.

2. The product only includes the housing and internal gears show at this link http://www.autotech.com/quaife/index2.htm Again it is a drop in replacement for the peg leg mechanism.

3. You are not required to send you differntal to Quaife. It is not rocket science to install this component. If you can use a feeler gauge and can read manual anyone can do this with the right tools. A good local shop can do this in a few hours. There is always the option you can send it to them but it’s up to.

4. A clutch type LSD is going to work terrible at best. This will be especially so if there is very little development like some offering already. It is not hard to make an LSD but it is difficult to tune all the variables to an application and their very high in maintenance. If you’re going racing then this is another story.
