Smile GA / NC / TN: Tail of the Dragon Meet - Jan 27

Greetings all!

Ninjaneer and bmwexecutive and I have been talking and we'd like to go on a roadtrip to the Tail of the Dragon on January 27.

Ninjaneer and bmwexecutive will be travelling from FL, and plan to spend the night in or near Buford, GA. That's not far from my house, so we're going to meet Saturday morning and drive up from there. The route we've chosen is pretty rural and fun most of the way up and part of the way back, and the part of the trip that will be after dark is mostly open highway so we can make good time getting "home". We've allowed for about 4 hours of time at the Dragon and nearby Fontana Dam (for photos), so people from other areas may want to meet us there.

Sign up on the calendar HERE.

More details to be posted as they become available.

Sounds great, nice job on the organization and thanks for picking out the places

Thankfully I have the utmost faith in my car and it hasn't given me any probs so far, but I sure hope I don't face anything on such a big road trip. My main concern is getting a nail or flat in these RFTs, then what? *Think happy thoughts*

OTOH I've racked up ~5500 driving back and forth to work an hour each way and have managed to stay out of trouble so hopefully it'll be okay It's just the same commute multiplied by 30 and out of state, no biggy

Can't wait!

Instead of fast food for lunch though why don't we stop at an Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday's or Friday's or Chili's? We can be in and out of any of those places in 45 minutes or less.

Yo Quiero Taco Bell!!!!!! hehe

Those all sound good but it all depends on party size though, which we don't know at this point in time. The higher the turn out, the more likely we're going to face schedule fluctuations in certain areas while we meet up, wait, get gas here and there when needed.

That portion happens before meeting anyone else at the Tail, so in other words it really depends on who meets up with us in GA.

*edit: GA, not Atlanta.

LOL. I don't think they have those restaurants out in the sticks where we'll be. I've been through there a bunch of times and it's pretty far out in the boonies compared to Tampa / Atlanta. I'm up for whatever is there, though.

Here's a link I found with some of the options:

I'm a newbie too!

My family and I have been to Helen, GA though on some nice curvy mountain roads. But it was in a rental Nissan Maxima

...gas, yeah, I don't even want to think about it. This trip will probably run me about $160 just in gas. And about 1,600 additional miles on my car. That's like half the miles I got on it now.

Woah that's far up there --- Cherokee County. I remember being up there for a family trip many moons ago. That's right near Maggie Valley. ... that was a fun trip!

My vote is for Subway.

Never been to the Dragon myself either. So far looks like I'm going to be the only one going without a 335i.

Remember to add yourself to the calendar.

I estimated (via Google) a round trip, from my place, of approx. 1260 miles and 21 hours of driving. That's almost a whole month of regular mileage covered in 3 days!!!

*edit: even w/o this trip, considering my regular driving and mileage that I rack up... I'm gonna hit the 50K warranty mark way before the 4 year mark

Haha. A month's worth of driving for me is about 425 miles so this trip will be at least three months worth of regular miles in three days.

Can't wait. This itinerary looks great. This is really going to be a fun trip, assuming no tickets and no accidents of course.

Anyone bringing a radar detector with?

Nope. Had to save some cash for the Nikon D80 I just bought.

Good thing you have the X50 though? Does it work well? Will it keep us out of trouble on the highway? I'm thinking about buying a set of cheap walkie talkies so that we can stay in contact with each other on the way. And when your radar flares up you can alert me.... or be an asshole and let me drive ahead and get a ticket.

Us? What us?
It works well, has picked up troopers with radar (KA) accurately. I've had a couple of "false" alerts of KA - couldn't find ANYONE around me, unless the cop was on a side street or maybe it was a vehicle with some active cruise control.

haha buncha BMW drivers with walkie talkies, that'd be funny to see. Though I think this would drive us crazy... "hey slow down, got an alert" *pause* "NOT! It was a false"

Well I won't be going much over speed limit. I usually stick to the 5-10 over, depends on how active it seems to be and what the road looks like... potential cop hiding spots etc. We'll still move, but safely

You know, I've been thinking about getting some walkie talkies too. But I want the big fancy kind with a range of something like 10 miles. We used some on the group ride to Asheville after the PCD, and they were really convenient and worked great. I was also thinking it was going to be too bad we couldn't talk to each other on the trip. Half the fun was going to be getting to know some other BMW fanatics. OTOH, the Dragon is a LOT of fun. So maybe 25%.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

5MPH over the limit though? I usually do at least 15MPH on highways, usually 10MPH on streets. If I had a radar detector I'd probably drive even faster too. If you're going 10MPH slower the entire trip I'm going to get there over an hour sooner than you.

As far as slowing down according to what the road looks like though, I'm with you there. If there's a lot of brush in the median or on both sides I slow down to no more than 10MPH over.

5-10MPH are the conservative numbers in my head. My actions may betray that once I'm on the road... the speed limit on the Howard Franklind is 65. I do 80. So

Good. Same as me then.

Do you ever drive on the Courtney Cambell? Know that bridge at about the half way point? There's no speed limit there so you can take it up to AutoBahn speeds. That's really the only place my car sees triple digits.

Not so much lately but I used to a lot. I take it on the way home SOMETIMES for a change of scenery or when I know the Howard Franklind is packed.

My friend with the G35 and I took it the day of the Clearwater meet... we got triple digits too, crazy fun.
