AT step Transmission or 6MT?

I was looking to get a few members from here to chime in on what they think about the steptronic transmission as opposed to the 6MT. I Currently have a '07 step and have only had it for about 3 months. Needless to say im loving it, Power delivery is smooth and strong and shifts are consistent but its just not that fun when coming out of a 6 speed transmission. and i find that im growing a little bored with it already. The paddle shifters are pretty fun but is just not the same. Anyhow i went to my BMW dealer to drop off for service, and they happen to have a similar 335i same packages and all but with a 6MT. I test drove it and immediately felt like it makes the driver feel more connected to the car giving more control of the gears and boost. Now im just really not sure what to do.....i think im going 6MT.

I have no experience with the automatic transmissions from BMW but the dual clutch transmissions are pretty crazy. I just recently got my 6MT and i love it though.

ive driven both the step and 6mt, and the 6mt is definitely more exciting. Some with step regret not getting the 6mt, but usually never the other way around.

i am pretty happy with the AT and i would say that 90% of the times i am happy with my choice but there is the 10% that sometimes would like the MT. since my gf is driving my car as well i was forced to get AT to prevent miss shifting.

MT is great for fun and on the track, but since the car is my daily driver and I'm occasionnally stuck in stop and go traffic I opted for AT. No regrets here

My prefs; AT in town and for straight WOT pulls. MT for inspired driving on twisty roads.

Thanks guys.

This is mostly what i was expecting to hear which is a good thing cause ive kinda already made up my mind on the 6MT. Thanks guys im sold lol . Still i'd love to get my hands on a 135i. but the 335i will fair up fine i guess. Slick silver, im in corpus christi. I make trips up to houston pretty regularly since i have family up there. Any how im off today to go wheel and deal on the 6MT, can't wait! Thanks for all the comments guys, it helped make a pretty much conclusive decision much more conclusive for me. oh and to shiv and Terry ill be hitting you all up for a chip here soon. Not sure which one, but thats an ongoing rant for another thread. Keep up the good posts, very helpful.

One more question?

this is in reference to the last guy who commented about WOT pulls and straight aways. Would it be safe to say that the 6MT could still be as consistent with shifting or in other words could the 6MT pull just as fast of times as a STEP. or is STEP just superior for the consistent shifting making it faster most of the time. pretty much is step faster, i only ask this cause i read on one of these posts that the AT transmission mates better with the n54.

if you know how to shift you can come pretty close to AT. MT is also shorter geared so you compensate with harder pull at the beginning.

The AT is a sensation for consistency on straight pulls, not to mention how convenient it is. Personally I still prefer the sticker though since I like gearing up and down under my own control on Road Racing tracks and roads. A slide inside and out of a roundabout now and then is never wrong either. This also means 4WD is out of the question, if you can not slide with a car, or do wheelies with a bike, it is not as fun. Neither sliding around or making wheelies are optimal for speed, but necessary for having fun which is important as hell. And you get the sexiest chicks as a bonus jk

Love my 6mt, its a little quirky at first, but once you get used to it, smiles all day.

Both are excellent transmissions. My buddy has a 6AT and I have a 6MT 335i and the shifts in his car is def. very crisp and precise.

there are times where i wouldn't mind an auto (long straight highway drives or traffic) but thats probably 10% of the time where i would feel that way. 6MT is the way to go for me.
