Just got pulled over -- tints have to go. What to do now?

Hey guys,

I got pulled over about an hour ago and was told "tint's are illegal, here's a fix-it ticket" . A buddy of mine is insistent that it isn't legal to pull someone over solely for that, I was under the impression that getting pulled over for that is fair game, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways, the reason I'm posting here is because I have a JB 335 with black interior, tints (on their way out), shadowline trim mod, black wheels, black side markers, etc (I imagine you get the picture, black is the theme to my ride lol). My question is will it look idiotic rolling around with a primarily black car without tints? I honestly can't imagine what a black on black car would look like without them. I looked around for a while trying to find any pictures, but it seems like everyone's gone the tint route. Any thoughts on design would be helpful guys, thanks for reading.

imo cops can pull you over for anything, no front plate, tint, etc.

Wasn't even dark at all. You could clearly see inside the car, I would put money on someone's ability to read a playing card on the center console from outside the car.

Get it removed, get the ticket signed off, go get it put back on.

I had 20% the first time with this car on the front. Now it's 5%, along with the back. lol

And, the cop is incorrect. Front tint is legal in the state of California, as long as allows 70% or more of visible light in.

The car will look completely different. I have a black E90 with backlines, shadow lines, and a black grill. I had to get some work done to it recently due to hail damage and the shop allowed a ton of debris in the window tracks, which scratched up my tint. So, I had the tint removed and re-tinted. During the process, I had to go a few days without tint. It was a huge difference to say the least. The car did not look the same and the blackout theme disappeared; might I add that I have a tan interior, so it stuck out like a sore thumb. Windows make up a strikingly large surface area of your vehicle, so you'd notice immediately. Additionally, the extra glare from the sun and bright lights at night are a nuisance. I was elated to get my E90 re-tinted; I would never own a vehicle without tint.

According to CHP California you cannot have ANY tint on the front windows. I would imagine most people already know this and play like they don't know when getting puled over. Even at 70% the film is not colorless so I doubt it would apply to the Jan 1999 exempt list noted below.

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

1.The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.

2.If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

hmm sounds like you just got an uptight cop so i wouldnt worry about getting pulled over again with it. the cop probably just thought you had dark tint since your car is blacked out but you can either
1. pay the fine and keep the tint
2. fix it then take the tint of just the front windows
3. fix it and get lighter tint on the fronts

again, i personally dont think you will get pulled over for it, my car is white but i have 20% tint which can be pretty dark in the right lighting and i have driven by many cops, actually one today, that looked at my car and just looked away like i didnt have tint at all. im sure your car will look great which ever route you choose

I just got my ticket in the mail, and the fine without fixing it is $270. So I have to believe that I can take the tint off and put it back on and pay the $25 for cheaper than that. I wasn't expecting it to be that much. This is my first tint ticket. I have 20% on everything except the windshield. Got pulled over at 5:50 in the morning. I just wish I could fight it because she marked dry road conditions and clear weather when it was dark and raining.

Wow man, this is really unfortunate news for us both .

Where are people here pulling these 100-150 numbers from then? 270 is way too much for me to consider keeping it on, there's no way it could be that expensive to get my front two windows tinted.

Is there any way to find out how much it costs online? the violation I was cited for was 26708 (A).

In CA

Watch out...it won't be fix-it ticket for the second time around if you gone too dark and attracts those dickhead cops again.

If you get pulled over for the second time, you will be paying fine for about $300 and they won't even ask you to remove tinted from your windows.

Now the third time won't be the same $300 but the same old tinted on your windows...

Try living in Michigan. 0% tinting allowed on the front windows, except for a 4" strip at the top, which looks so freaking stupid no one does it.

Hey guys, I just wanted to double check something. So I can get my tint ticket signed off by a police officer from another city, and mail it in with the $25, correct? Please let me know. Thanks.

Damn, Im there too. Got pulled over today for speeding but he gave me a break and only ticketed me for the tint on the front. He didn't site me for the brake light smoke but he wrote it on the tix so I may have to fix that too for the Fix-it ticket. What a pain! But much better than the speeding tix would have been
