Angry Trouble starting E92 335d today....

Hi folks,

Went out to start my car just now and I slot the key in, foot on brake, car in park etc. etc. and thumb the button and.......... nothing (as in engine NOT turning over at all - and plenty of juice in battery...all lights working OK). Again. Nothing. Etc. Etc. Then on about the sixth try... thumb the button.....coupla seconds of nothing...then car starts. Hurray! But. WTF was up? Last time I drove the car was only a coupla days ago. When I sprayed the English Winter salty road grime off at the local car-wash. (I also ended up with a little mist/condensation in both headlights - won't go so close with the lance again...) Could it have been some damp that had got onto some electrics somewhere when I washed the car as abovementioned?? Anyone else out there had anything similar going on?

What you say is quite interesting. A while back I got a lift to work from the dealers (320d saloon) when the Z4 was in for some attention. Moving away from a set of traffic lights, slightly downhill, 2nd gear, the driver stalled it (made an excuse that with the diesels it wasn't easy to pull away in 2nd ) Anyway, hitting the start button a few times did nothing and there was no sign of life at all - the engine wouldn't even turn over. Eventually he took the key out, pushed it back in and it started right away. There was nothing lit on the dashboard to say what the problem was. I wondered if the key/start button setup could be problematic.

A bit off topic, but interesting that you should mention this as I'm getting condensation in the lenses without going anywhere near a car wash. My previous car also misted up but only on the rear lenses.

Hope the starting problem is just a glitch rather than a fault.

BMW keys are rechargeable. When you slot the key into the receptacle it charges the key.

I think your key may not be fully charged - unusual for a new car.
If you take the car on a few long drives i'm sure it will be ok.

Had the car back to the dealer for a diagnostic check. A fault showed with the brake pedal sensor. As such - on the occasions that the car wouldn't start - the car wouldn't start cos it thought I didn't have my foot on the brake pedal. The dealer got the car's computer to do a full reset of itself. As such, the dealer thinks that the car will likely now be OK. If, however, the problem re-emerges, then further intervention will be required.

I had a similar experience and so has my friend (both got 335i se coupes) felt like there was something stuck under the brake pedal wouldn't press down so start button would operate just released and pressed the brake pedal a couple of times and hey presto started (only done it the once in 3 months) but sounds like it might be a fault.

Surely the logic must be that if the brake is pressed far enough to light the brake lights, then the car should be happy to start?

Just a thought!

When it did it on mine I must admit I didn't take that much notice but if I remember correctly it felt as if the Brake pedal was locked wouldn't go down more than about 1/4"

Didn't think they were on the newer systems?????

AFAIK the new systems don't have any metal-metal contact.

Please tell me if i'm wrong!!!

I'm pretty sure the non-comfort-access keyfobs are rechargable, and yes there doesn't appear to be any metal-metal contact... but I don't think it needs metal contact to recharge?

I could also be completely wrong!

Indeed- the non-CA keyfobs make use of inductive charging when the keyfob is in the slot & the car is running.

The CA keyfobs have ordinary, non-rechargeable batteries in them- since they will hardly ever be placed into the keyslot anyway.

All the best.

Just had the same problem (2nd time) Brake pedal wouldn't move auto gear selector also stuck in park, ignition on, But start button wouldn't turn it over rocked the brake pedal up and down (as much as I could a couple of times) and started first time will try to get it booked in to be looked at. Like you mike (335d coupe) I also had just had it washed Friday and 1st time (Sunday) since I've been in it (so wondered if it was water getting into the sensor or something)
Have you had any problems since going back to the dealers Mike?

According to the book, the following symbol should appear if you don't have your foot on the brake when hitting the start button. Not actually tried it on mine to see if the symbol shows.

Didn't notice but may have missed it so if it does it again I'll look out for that symbol

335D coupe- maby the button on the remote was pressed in constantly by something causing the battery to discharge, this happened to me once with my TV remote, it had fairly new batteries in it, then i left it sitting with another remote on top of it, and the next day the batteries were flat, because one of the buttons was pushed in. Maby the same thing happened to you? if it happend again, try the other key.

I'm sure another symbol comes up on the dash to show that the battery in the remote is a bit low on charge???

On second thoughts that just might be for remotes which are for comfort access...
