There's already cars on the road that does this, cayman, s2000, miata, elise, and cooper.

The part with the most relevance is the greener. EU regulations and Obama MPG standards will be putting BMW under a lot of stress to meet the desired outcomes. Hence the effort to more mpg that will also put a strain on research costs. If I remember correctly BMW has the longest way to go to meet standards. The BMW city car will help, but don't look for a 1 Series special edition to be any more than a rehash of proven bits.

Like what they say on TopGear, go out and buy a bicycle plant. Then you can really average lower. If this is the case then Ferrari, Lambo, and Aston are going to go out of business very soon.

I just don't undertsnad why BMW doesn't bring the 1er hatch in all of it's diseal mpg fortune to the states. That and kill the x6 and you have a cafe ready car company
