Downpipes Installed: Rasp noise?
hey guys, today a buddy and i installed my VK downpipes and BMS 02 fix (v3) everything went pretty smoothly (thanks to the dyi on here) and im loving the new sound from the exhaust/turbos and the added power as well. also i raised the map on my jb3 from 5 to 7 finally and
only problem is im sometimes hearing a rasp noise coming from under the passenger side i havent had a chance to get back under the car but plan on tomorrow to check things out. just wanted to see if anyone had this issue and what it could be coming from. |

A rasp from the exhaust note when you hit like 4k rpms if so thats what comes with CL downpipes. Could be the downpipes rattling also so take that in mind. They might be touching something i.e each other. When does it rasp when cruising or when WOT?

It rasps at different moments. I mainly hear it when I let off the gas though. I'm also thnking it's the heat shield touching something since we had to bend it a bit to fit our hands through.

Heat shield is touching the downpipe, I'm pretty sure.

not the heat shield guys, ive been under the car all morning trying to figure out where its coming from. sounds like its coming from the rear where the dp's connect to the exhaust. i bought new gaskets and bolts from ar design so i doubt it has anything to do with the gaskets. i looked everywhere and couldnt see anything touching. i made a few quick videos to let you guys hear what it sounds like...hopefully someone can chime in today.
so annoying... so youre saying its normal for it to rasp? it does it when i first start the car and gradually goes away once the engine warms up, at idle it doesnt do it. once i rev it a bit it will do it again. also does it when i let of the gas after accelerating.

completely normal. When I first got mine installed I was concerned too. But do a search and you will see that ALL catless downpipes have some rasp to them. The rasp can be corrected by installing a resonator. I too have the rasp and it's really noticable after a cold start. It subsides once the car warms up and is then only heard under WOT. MS downpipes here.

This might actually be normal, Dp's usually add some RASP. Especially when catless.
I know a couple buddies of mine even at idle you hear a raspy noise. Could still be wastegates though the more I think about it. Last edited by Jeff@TopGearSolutions; 07-11-2010 at 10:57 PM.. |

The rasp is coming from the exhaust itself.....I had the same problem until I installed resonators to the exhaust...Check out this thread...

I have the VK dps and they don't really add rasp, they just make whatever exhaust you have louder. The good news is downpipes on a stock exhaust does not drone.

just did some more driving and it seems like they rasp when accelerating and when i first start the car. when coasting they are silent the rasp and when engine warms up and idles the noise goes away as well. its not coming from the tips of the exhaust but right at the point where the dp's meet the exhaust, where i put in new gaskets. exhaust leak doesnt sound like this does it? |

That's your wastegates rattling.
Pretty common problem in the US from what I read on here. Going catless accentuates the sounds which is why you're only noticing it now, as yours aren't too bad. Sometimes a procede will fix it, but others have had their turbos swapped on warranty and they still get this rattle. |
