Question about N54 internals upgrade

Hey guys,

Just wanted to see if anybody knows about any company that offers forged pistons for N54. Also wanted to know the same thing about camshaft and rods.

Ps, I know Mahle does forged pistons but dont know if anybody else does such thing in Southern California.

Is there anything else to do when it comes down to engine internal upgrades?

Your Assistance is greatly appreciated.

IIRC, Crower is out of SoCal he/they have done lots of stroker kits in the past. You might contact them.

I *think* the pistons and the rods are forged as well.

^ The pistons are forged, I'm not sure about the rods.

Mahle does indeed produce forged pistons for the N54 and, among others, supplies Alpina with such (with a lowered compression ratio).

There's also the company CP that produces pistons and its sister company Carrillo produces aftermarket piston rods. In fact, both belong (now) to the Austrian company Pankl Racing that is very well known for high quality (but not cheap) engine components. Here's the website: CP-Carrillo.

I know of at least one member of this forum who already has these pistons and rods in his engine. Be prepared for a rather hefty price tag, though.

I'll probably also invest in this at the beginning of next year, together with the upgraded turbos from Turbo Dynamics.

I'm surprised no one has developed a stroker kit yet

1) Racing Dynamics has developed such a stroker kit. In Germany someone with a 135i even ordered it, due to software and hardware problems RD was however not able to get the car running (search for the thread, I posted that sometime earlier this year).

2) I'm not really surprised as, compared to other modifications, stroker kits are hugely expensive and necessitate a considerable amount of labour. The same (EDIT: substantially more) power increase can be achieved with far less cash and different modifications on a FI car.

I have the same plan. I am actually really thinking about EPL and their TiAl upgraded turbos. EPL has great reputation in 996 and 997 tt cars and many over 6speedonline use their product.

Anyways, thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

pistons aren't forged, just the crankshaft...where did you get that the pistons are forged? pistons and rods are not forged, see enrita's thread on his engine failure, look at comments and pics..

What is you goal? will this car be a daily driver or something you track every now and then, or are you intending on racing the car??

all of these things play into suggesting any type of upgrade. Most piston manufacturers can (if you look at their catalog) build you a custom piston to your specs. Companies like TRW have been providing race pistons for years, Mahle is a good name in the game and so is Carrillo -- as a lot of the AA fuelers (putting down quite a bit more hp) have used Carrillo rods with good success. dont expect to get a bargain on some of these type of parts.. quality and added durability is gonna cost you .. so fasten you seat belt...

but in the long run, if you are keeping this as a daily driver, the need to upgrade your internals are minimal, as the stock components are over engineered -- you hear a lot of things about BMW, but not a lot about engine failure -- unless something external contributed to it.. not just the N54 -- look back at some of the older cars.

^^ great point. That's why I made the thread to see your openion and it makes sense. I guess I'm trying to over protect it as I start moding and wanna keep it for a long time. I guess my target is bout 420hp at the cranck and wanna make sure the engine can take that for years to come.

Thanks for help.

Your car makes 300hp. 420hp is less than 50% increase. Oem components typically do not need to be upgraded to handle "minor" hp increase.

There is no need to upgrade internals if you are not planning pushing over 500 whp. The n54 is incredibly well built with very good parts.
