Spacer Question

I'll need some spacers to fit standard e92 wheels onto the M3

The wheel offsets are:

e92 MV3 Front 34, Rear 37
e92 M3 Front 29, Rear 23

I know it may seem a bit obvious, but just looking for clarification; I'm assuming that the optimum spacers will be 5mm for the fronts and 15mm for the rears?

Any recommendations on where to get them from, along with longer bolts?

Cheers

Try europerfomance.co.uk H + R ones come with bolts to fix to your hub with, depending on which set you get.

I got mine from Teddy @ SSDD - he supplied Eibach Hub-centric spacers (essential - the cheaper ones on ebay etc are just flat spacers and do not locate on the hub)

He also supplies the longer wheel bolts and longer locking bolts.

I think you may struggle on the 5mm ones though, most seem to start at 10mm ish?

I'll keep that in mind! What I have found is that a 10mm pair is actually 2 x 5mm, so I'd need a 30mm set for the rears.

Standard front M3 wheel is an 8.5J = 215.9mm wide
Standard front E92 wheel is an 8J = 203.2mm

Difference in width is 12.7mm, which if evenly distributed is 6.35mm either side of the centre line.

Therefore, assuming the same offset, the outside of the wheel on the regular E92 will sit 6.35mm narrower into the car.

If the offset from the M3 wheel to the E92 wheel increases by 5mm as stated in Ed's post, the wheel inherently is 5mm further into the car.

Therefore, going from a M3 8.5J wheel with an ET29 offset, to a regular E92 8J wheel with an ET34 offset, the total difference in movement into the car is 11.35mm

So, for the front axle, to keep the track width more or less the same, you would need a 10mm spacer

For the rear wheel, the standard E92 335i 19" rear wheel is a 9J with either an ET37 or ET39 offset.
The M3 rear wheel is a 9.5J with ET23 offset.

9J width is 228.6mm
9.5J width is 241.3mm

Difference assuming offset is the same is 12.7mm which is 6.35mm either side of the centre line

Difference in offset is 14mm. Therefore total movement inward is 20.35mm

If you want to keep the same stance, you would need a 20mm spacer. However that would generally be considered a bit too big a spacer - I would suggest a 15mm spacer be the maximum you use.

Make sure the spacers you get are hub-centric. Either H&R or Eibach are recommended.

Spot on Tone

Front wheel will have 1mm MORE clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will RETRACT 11mm

Rear wheel will have 8mm LESS clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will RETRACT 20mm

Ed, I gather this is for a winter wheel setup? How about looking for a set of 18" M3 rims?

Yes, it is for the winter set. 18'' M3 OEMs are not easy to come by!

But I think the E46 ones have similar, if not the same offset?

Should be tons of them about?

E46 M3 OEM Wheels in 18" size are 8J front and 9J rear with the following offsets -

Front 8J x ET47
Rear 9J x ET26

Using the front E46 OEM wheel will require a 25mm spacer!
You can use a rear E46 OEM wheel with a 10mm spacer

The problem will be the front wheels - they just don't work on the E92 M3

Thanks, but I already have MV3 18'' wheels & winter tyres, so I'm looking to have them refurbed and powder coated in darker colour. Don't want to fork out for another set of winters!

They'll also fit a non-M e92 when I've spent all my money on petrol an have to sell the M3.

You should forego a week of petrol money, and spend it on steak instead...
