My E92 335d coupe Story!
ok so i got my 335d 6 weeks ago and here it is.
2000 miles in and i f'in loved this car! it was faster than i ever imagined and handled like a dream. With those tyres the ride is fine on smooth roads, but if you hit a bump you know all about it. Turn the tractions crap off and its awseome. For anyone who cares i have a k800i and the bluetooth worked perfectly with it. No hitches at all. The nav was excellent and the bmw assist was way more useful than i thought it would be. The way they know exactly where you are when you phone is kinda freaky. And the way they send you the details of your destination direct into the navigation along with the phone number is supreme. Sound system was adequate but no more or no less. Playing mp3 direct from cd is nice. Idrive can be a little slow but the voice activation kit really helps alot and works flawlessly so long as there is little background noise. Im getting 33 to the gallon now and by no means do i drive anything other than fast 99% of the time. Drove to belgium the other day and on the motorways was getting 37mpg cruising at over 100 mph. Reached 150 mph no problem when pushed. One or two negative points. The silver paint on the drum of the brake discs is flaking on one, and i will be demanding a replacement. There is a small weird vibrating noise every so often but this only happend since the tracker was installed so i think they may have screwed something up. My insurance was cheaper than on my previous car which was a 525d for some weird reason and it gets better fuel. Weird but nice. THEN DISASTER!!! Monday last week when i was driving round a corner at normal speeds and the steering went completely rigid. i veered off the road and into a bollard and smashed my car up. to cut a long story short, bmw engineers from germany came and looked and the power steering pump died and something also went wrong with the rack. I get a new car in january. same spec. may well be a recall! I get a brand new car exact same spec, but still its a pain in the ass and pretty scary! My new car will arrive first week of January. ordered sapphire black and coral red interior this time. really missing it and cant wait to have it back! I also ordered the ACS type IV bi colors and the aero kit. They should go on a couple of weeks after. And also have it booked in with DMS for remap first week of feb. ill post pics soon as i have them. |

That's scary. Do you know if the recall is a problem on the E92's or just the 335d ? Bit worried about mine now!

Really sorry to hear that, and it does sound quite scary. Are you getting a new car with same spec because you have the shortfall insurance, or because BMW admitted that a serious fault occurred?

i dont know if it will be a recall or not. the faulty parts have been sent back to germany for inspection.
It is BMW that are giving me a new car because they admit it was a serious fault on their behalf. They also gave me financial compensation. Not a massive amount but the gesture was acceptable. |

Wow!
Quite a serious problem with the steering pump!! Did you have the optional 'Active steering' fitted to your car?
Great choice with the black and red combo....same as my 335i! |

Mmmm..... I think I'll be having words with my own (very good) BMW dealer about this issue to try and find out how many other folks (if any - and I do hope that there aren't any..... ) have had similar problems. Sure glad to hear that you came out of THAT 'little' episode OK Smokin.....

eeeek! Lucky that you were at normal speeds and that no other traffic got involved.
Glad you're okay and that BMW are treating the incident with the seriousness that it deserves. Hope you enjoy the replacement.

Horrible story ... but fortunate everything worked out for you!
I don't think this is a common problem or you would hear more about it (cfr the 335i overheating problem). You had 19" wheels ... did you hear more noises in your interior, rattles, squeaks etc? Most people who go for 19" replace their run flats with normal tyres. Some people even say 19" + regular tyres == 17" + run flats regarding comfort.

Strewth, glad you're OK. That can't have been a good experience.
Interested to find out what BMW have to say. D. Fellow E92 335D owner

I was about to post how great your car looked, I'm really sorry to hear about the accident. Glad you came through it ok and that they will replace without any hassels.
On the steering issue, I hope this proves to be just a freak one off for the 335d owners. Interestingly, the 330d has a completely different, fully electric (motored, not hydrolic) steering.

Wow - that is a bit scary for those of us with very similar cars. Sorry to hear your story - It must have been quite a shock for you when it happened. On the positive side, it sounds like BMW are treating you well, and you're getting a new car out of it.
You mention insurance, maybe I should start a separate thread, but just wondering what other people are paying for their 335d's? My best quote so far is £694 with £350 excess (4 years no claims). I have been considering DMS, but I've never been sure that it's worth the extra cost and the risk (of voiding the warranty) ... please let us know what difference it makes when you get yours done.

I thought all coupes had the electric power steering setup (the steering is assisted by an electric servomotor rather than a conventional hydraulic pump and the electric motor operates only when the steering wheel is turned)???
