Will you keep your E90 for a looong time?
Hey Everyone..
Just wondering who will keep their E90 for an extended period of time? I want to b/c I love this car (well give to my wife and get a E92 ) however I am concerned with keeping it after the warrenty runs out especially b/c of i-Drive...what are your all thoughts? Mechanically BMW's are great but all this new technology (adaptive lights, door lights etc) I am concerned it will be VERY expensive to fix afterward.

Plan to keep her for atleast 6-7 years. Extended the warranty out to six years the day I picked up the car.

I don't have an E90, but I wouldn't want to keep it past warranty, whether it be extended or standard. Things do get expensive to fix and to me its not worth the risk. Just get a new car. Our last Mercedes (out of warranty...stupid...) would have cost 3 grand to fix electrical stuff that didn't work sometimes, speedometer was moody, electric antenna was the same way, etc. Never again will we have an out of warranty German car.
If you love it that much as many of you seem to, just buy another 3. |

If you are financing, by the time the warranty runs out your are done with your monthly payments (or almost done). Even if you have to fix something that costs $700 every once in a while, it will be cheaper than giving $700 *every month* to the bank. That is if you are still in love with the car and are not drooling to get the latest 355 or 375 or whatever BMW will come up with 7 years from now...
If you paid for the car in full and in 4 years you can afford a brand new one, then that's a different matter of course. |

I will be dropping my car off at the 3 year mark and getting a new one thanks to the wonders of leasing. I had my last car (Volvo S70) off warranty and it was bad enough to never make the same mistake again.

Im not sure if I will keep it or not. I love the car, and if I mod it, I would like to keep it for at least 5-6 years. If I dont mod much, I will like get rid of it in about 4 years which for me is about 80k miles.

I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years. At some point in the next 5 years I'll buy a stupidly fast car that is horribly impractical (ideally an Elise) and the e92 will become my winter "beater". So it's going to be in the garage for quite a while.

However, I-drive technology is very similar to many other components that have existed in cars for a long time (simple combination of many). It should not be any more problematic then other units from any other vehicle. If your concerns continue, I suggest extending your warranty. My lease is up in two years. |

I may sell mine when I leave the island especially if the Army will not pass shipping two cars for free. I'm getting deployed to Iraq in June and thinking of the 08 model and have it shipped back home to SC and then I'm off to another military school but who knows? I know the 330 will sell here with no problem being that we only have 1 dealership. I really like the coupe and the fact that its on par with the older E46. I only have 1 child right now so a coupe is not a problem for the future. I might sell my SUV here too!

maybe till the warranty ends. Havent been able to keep a car for more than 1.2 years, and thats with 12 cars in the last 11 years. I did get the 330i specifically to avoid any FI issues (have had turbo, twin turbo and sc cars in the past)

My 97 328i will be passed on to my son. Still going strong at 125k miles. One thing I've found about some of the electronics, is that they tend to fix themselves. I had a light that went out in the dash, now it's back on again. Occasionally my wipers don't work for a time or two, then they work again. I was able to fix my OBC myself, with online DIY advice. The internet is a great resource for many glitches that might go wrong, if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty.
I'm expecting that my 335i might be the last gasoline powered car that I own. |
