Manual Transmission Question

1.)Anybody here have a problem with 3rd gear being a bit tight sometimes.

2.) Anybody experience a burning type smell for the first couple hundred miles on there cars from trany or anything on those lines?

3.) When you upshift in other words from lets say 2nd to 3rd do you give the car a little gas to make the shift clean or do you remove your foot compleltly off the gas until you have completed the shift.

1) No

2) Yes

3) upshift or downshift?
a. upshift from 2 to 3, shift first, then gas as clutch pedal is released
b. downshift from 3 to 2, rev-match (give gas), then engage clutch (RPM will depend on speed of car)

im assuming you learned how to rev match teh car by watchin how high it revs in certain gears or do you assume.

Learned from watching the revs (once again, depends on speed of car). But in the heat of a moment (ie, when your toe is pressing the brake pedal) assuming happens frequently.

1. no

2. yes

3. depends on the rpm im shifting and how fast im shifting. if im doing a higher rev quick shift, no gas cuz theres no need to rev match. but if its a low rpm shift like 2-3 then i might do a touch of gas to make it smooth.

1) No. SOmetimes it feels tight (notchy) going from 1st to 2nd. Overall, not the best MT I've seen...

2) Yes

3) Most of the time -- No. However, the MT seems to have the RPMs falling prett fast, so it could be "jumpy" if not careful.

just imagine manual car that does not have the RPM display, you would have to assume the rmp. It just take lots of practices under your belt.

I wonder how these step are different if you remover the CDV?

It's hard to describe but if I shift from 2nd to 3rd quickly it seems that its not as direct as say when I go from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th quickly.

I think I know what you are saying. 3rd gear appears to have the longest travel. for example, 1-2 has short travel, just pull down. Same with 3-4 and same with 5-6. 2-3 felt like a longer travel for me. Some of you might say 4-5 is also longer travel but for me it is very easy to go from 4-5.

Rev-matching takes practice. I like to describe it as "bliping" the throttle. When done properly there's no jerking.

I rev-match. Shifting is pretty smooth.

Incidentally, I was having a negative experience between gates (notchy, crunchy) but the other night on a desolate section of the highway after work (I'm an investment banker - some late nights this one at 4 am) where there are no exits (or cops, ever) I took it up to redline in 2nd, 3rd, and up there in 4th (got to 125). After that, car shifts as smooth as butter. Weird, not sure why that would matter. But, it did. Try letting the car off its leash some time if you can and see if it helps.

Lol, that might explain why my car shifts very nice/smooth everytime I get her back from the dealer.

You naturally pick up on the sounds of the engine and recognize tones of RPM. Similar concept to accustoming yourself to your cars traveling speed.

Downshift to accelerate: CDV

Downshift to decelerate: CDV no big deal (to me)
