Hartge tuning for 335
Just received a newsmail from Hartge where they launch a new upgrade for the e92 335 i :
11 90 0335 G Engine conversion by ECU modification for 335i 293 kW (340 hp) / 5800 rpm 450 Nm (lb-ft 332) / 1500 rpm This is the first upgrade I have seen from any of the well known tuners.......but I am a little disapointed in regards to the numbers.... What do you guys think ? Will the Hartge conversion keep the guarantee from BMW for the engine ? regards Jo |

Awesome question. Pricing?
Honestly, if those numbers are at the crank, then forget about it. I mean, you know it's gonna cost an arm and a leg and then we have Vishnu with their awesome numbers. Hmmmm tough choice

From checking out their website, they have some 5.0 (E39 M5 motor) conversion kits that produce 400hp and 368tq. These are the figures at the crank. So this must mean the (340 hp / 332 tq) should be crank numbers as well..... I believe they base their numbers on 91 octane.
This would be their equivalent to Vishnu's Stage 0 kit on 91 octane. The results for this is still not available..... |

it's not hard or rare to create maps for a turbocharged car. it has been done for every recent turbocharged car in history and its a well known fact among turbo enthusiasts.
personally i'd go with Shiv, just because his product is well documented on these forums, he communicates with the customers, he knows what he's doing, and Hartge's upgrade is probably marked up 1,000-2,000 beans compared to the Vishnu. in a few years, after the new M3 is released, the 335i will be bumped up in the power department, probably using very similar techniques to what Shiv is using now. oh the joys of turbocharged engines |

Coming from the VW/Audi tuning world, when it comes to power output for turbo charged cars, the Euro tuners are usually a few ponies shy of the American tuners. The reason that's been given in the past is that they tend to be on the safe side when it comes to peak boost since they have stretches of road where the vehicle can see extended periods of high speeds (think autobahn) that we won't find here. To make sure temps stay in check, they usually don't push the boost levels as high as US tuners.
Now, before anyone starts the flame throwing... this is not meant to dis Shiv or any other tuners out there. I'm only passing along an explanation for the lower power numbers from the folks across the pond. I prefer the higher numbers and will most likely go with the Xede when the time comes because, well, the effort that he's been putting into the development and the sharing of information has been more than enough to convince me to want to support his efforts by purchasing his products. Maybe a lower boost file for track days might be a good idea if these motors can't take the heat but, only time will tell. |

also, the bigger tuners have a lot more at stake by pushing the limit on tuning where failures, even 1 in a 100 occur can be detrimental.
