Wind Noise from Sunroof

Noticed today that I was getting a fair amount of wind noise around the front seal of the sunroof, especially when the sun shade is open. Does anyone else notice this?

I have had a few cars in the past that the alignment has been off, or maybe this is normal.

Thanks

Jb

I presume from how you wrote your message that the sunroof is closed and not open. Are you sure it is completely closed? If it happens when the sunroof is open then it is probably normal. The plastic sawtooth flapper is supposed to reduce this.

My x3 had a seal that would come up in the wind... check the rubber seal to make sure it doesnt come up at all around the glass, it should be totally flat with the cars roofline.

Check to see if the sunroof is closed properly first then take a look at the seal and see if there are any cracks or holes that would make the noise. You shouldn't hear any noise with it closed.

Anyone think the sawtooth flapper (or whatever its called) actually causes more noise?

No... The physics behind it were explained here in depth before (do a search and you will find it). Essentially it has to do with fluid dynamics and the boundry layer created around the car.

Do a test on the highway.. Open the sunroof alittle so that the sawtooth wind breaker doesn't come up yet, then open it all the way. You will notice the different. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the flapper (as you call it) is only spring loaded and you should be able to pull it down with your hand when the roof is open (I could be wrong, and it might just get locked in the up position when the roof is fully open). Try the same test then...

I can't remember the reason either but there is one! I think your explanation is in the ball park atleast. Ever wonder why no one has the sunroof deflector.

Me too!
Recently I have noticed the same thing, noise close to the front of it with the shade open.
I'm sure I would have noticed before if it was this loud.
Maybe the seal has deteriorated.
I'm going to take mine in soon to deal with this problem and the flat spot/hesitation around 3800 rpm's.

I don't have a sawtooth flapper, mine has a thingy with a net on it..........goes up about 3 inches above the car, and yes it causes more sound, and with out my rear windows cracked my sunroof causes crazy wind-bass in my car, but that has been covered here many times........

Get your car checked out att the dealer. I almost always have my sunshade open but I've never heard any excess noise from that area.

Aesthetics. Those things are damned ugly.

My old E60 had this noise when the shade was open, even at low speeds of less than 100km/h. The dealership was unable to fix it, they tried to adjust the sunroof several times. In your case, you should not hear anything from the sunroof, even with the shade open at cruising speeds.
Don´t know what made me get this stupid sunroof again in the E92 since I never use it anyway. It is quiet at normal speeds (up to around 200/220km/h) although at speeds beyond, it does generate some heavy noise. At vmax (250km/h) it sounds as if the sunroof is about to disintegrate, even with the shade closed. Also the side windows do get a "little" noisy as well. As long as the wheels don´t come off I couldn´t care less
