Oil Change? (for overseas US military)

So what are you guys paying for oil changes at your local BMW center? Mine quoted me nearly 250 euros, which was a bit shocking. I'd like to do my break in oil change at 1200 miles and also my one year oil change (I won't be back in the States yet) but I'm not sure I can stomach that bill twice. I suppose I could do the oil change myself, but I've never done one before. It looks easy enough, but do I really want to "practice" on a brand-new BMW? Alternatively, I could let the on-base shop do it for probably $40 - as long as I make sure they use the right oil and filter, that should be okay...maybe. Thoughts? What do you guys do for service?

I do my oil changes myself. It is not hard. You could do it over at MWR's craft skills shop. You will need a oil cap tool & hex tool for the drain plug. IF you buy your oil on base make sure to get the Mobil-1 in the black label.

My two local German dealers quoted me 130 ish euros IF I bring them the oil & a tax/VAT form (19% sales tax in Germany!). I prefer to do it myself anyway. I have all my own tools so its no big deal for me. Btw.. the dealers over here charge 110 euros per hour. How much do they charge in Spain? 200 euros???

Everything you need to know is here: DIY 128i oil change.

I don't know their hourly rate - I'm sure it's astronomical. Thanks for the tips.

Just remember to only buy BMW certified oil and keep your receipts and try to take photos of the change. This is all just to CYA if something happens and BMW claims you didn't change the oil properly.

I just had the break-in oil changed about 1500 miles done by these excellent folks for $110.00, including NC state tax. The use all BMW OME products, which were included with the price. http://www.mpoweredautomotive.com/

Not sure how that will translate to the Continent, but based upon my limited experiences it'll be more than €100. As mentioned, if you have the inclination and access to the facilities, you can do it yourself; there are some excellent DIY instructions here at 1Addicts.com.

I paid 64,41 Euros at Euler in Hofheim with my own Castrol RS Oil (7Liters will cost you ~100 Euros at ATU) Online prices are at ~9-11 Euros per Liter for 0W-40 (only BMW LL04 Oil here). I can scan the bill if I find it. 250 is total rip off.

Dack,

How do you reset the SES ligth and mileage on the car or do you get that done by someone else? Great info on the link.

There seems to be two schools of thought on this and the subject has generated a lot of debate here on the forum. I'm from the old school and have doubts about 15k mile oil changes even with synthetic and improved filters, especially for turbos; also, I purchased, as opposed to leasing, so I consider a break-in oil change essential. If you're leasing, well, it's someone else's problem, either under warranty or after it runs.

I do think the need varies with the type of driving, if you're doing city driving a lot, with short drives and cold shutdowns, then changing at 7500 certainly can't hurt. I have found my 135i requires at least 20 miles of highway driving before the oil is even close to operating temperature and the ambient air temp is already 28º-30º C during the day.

Break your Watercooler so it runs all the time for whatever reason temp goes up almost instantly ^^

Hi Elsabor,

I do NOT reset the oil SES light. I suppose I should buy a BT scan tool. But for now I am ok with the 2 years or 22K km count down - to the free dealer oil change. BMW service plan is more like no service though.

I like doing my own oil changed that way I know everything was done properly. Plus.... my car never gets damage by some grease monkey.

Btw... I have just over 11K kms (I've set the odo to be in Kms) on my car. I have already changed the oil twice. Once at 2,400 kms, and again at 5,700 kms. I am thinking about changing it again, since I am almost down 1 liter on the e-gauge(I've been running the car hard recently). I guess I am just old school (or... OCD!).

I use Mobil-1 in the black label: 0w40 BMW Long Life-1.

Some people prefer the Castrol oil (since that IS what BMW reccomends) bought at the US dealers. Tischer and/or Dan@ UnitedBMWonline.com stock the oil change kits (oil filter & 7qt of Castrol oil)

As long as you use an oil that carries the BMW LL-1 approval you should be ok. But asking what kind of oil is best is like asking which religion is better!?!?!? :"))

Btw... You guys in Germany... why are you buying your Castrol oil thru ATU for 100 euros plus!!! Don't you have any Stahl Grubbe(Tip Top) near you? You should be able to buy that oil for less. I will ask the next time I go to my S.G. I think they sell the Castrol (the 5L jug) for 45 euros or so!! (List price is 99 euros though! ) Thats what I paid/bought when I had a VW TDi(45 euros). I needed a special euro oil for "pumpe duesse". Mobil-1 doesn't make one for P.D.

Hi Guys,

I was at my aftermarket parts place today(StahlGruber). I was picking up some P21S wheel gel and some Sonax products.

I checked their Castrol oil prices... they sell a 5 liter jug of "Castrol RS full synthetic oil" (Bmw Long Life 4: LL-4) for 75 euros list price. When you give them a VAT form the price goes down to 50 euros! That is no MwSt(19%) tax and discounted price.

A single 1 liter bottle of the same Castrol oil sells for 19 euros. Discount and no MwSt price of 12 euros.

So for seven liters of Castrol oil the "good guy" price would be 74 euros. You have to give them a MwSt form so they do not charge you the German tax. Only cost $4 from MWR for a form.

Is that what you are paying Ghostbear?

I should mention when you go to StahlGruber what the price on the shelf says is NOT the price you will end up paying. Everyone will have a account number... just tell them you have a MwSt form and they will know the correct acct number (or send me a PM).

Sometimes when I buy small cheap things(I don't mind paying some German taxes)... the guys there just throw my parts under the local Polizei acct!! I just pay them in cash/bar and go on my merry way. Saves me a VAT form. I still save big time!

For instance I bought a 1Liter bottle of P21S for 13 euros. The normal price is 23 euros.

Here is a map with all of Stalhgruber locations in Germany.

I thought you could just reset this with the the buttons in the drivers seat. The little button that resets you trip odometer should do it. Its in another post i believe in the 3s area.
