Edmunds Inside Line 335i Coupe Review (and Dyno)

Just thought I'd share the new Edmunds Inside Line Review (and Dyno) of the '07 BMW 335i Coupe. Hint -- they also got 0-60 mph in 4.8 sec. and their car dyno'd at 279 whp! Needless to say, Edmunds was absolutely floored! Check it out...

now it makes sense... they posted here about a month ago, looking for someone with a 335i offering a free dyno.

But but, someone else in here said the 335 was mediocre...!? Edmunds must also be full of it...

I would've thought this article would garner immediate criticism. I was about to scream, "Flamesuit On!" to the OP. I'm pleasantly surprised!

Thanks for the post; very nice read.

Interesting point they had about the boost. I wonder if the difference had to do with the "software update" mentioned on the board recently. Seeing theirs was a press car it was probably older and may not have made it back to the shop for the update yet.

I hate it how they keep comparing it to the M3... its not even the same cars... save it for when the new M3 comes out...

Since I put off buying an M3 last year in anticipation of the 335i, that comparison makes me very happy.

You do have to make the comparison. As of now, the acceleration performance of the 335 is almost identical to that of the E46 M3. BMW probably understated the power rating to keep sales of the E46 M3 going, and to make the E90/92 M3 seem that much better with its small displacement 400 hp V8.

On a track, Im sure there are huge differences between the cars. Advantage to the M3 on that one, but Im sure the E92 is not all that far behind.

I consider it a good thing that the E92 is getting those comparisons. The E46 M3 is a great car, and to be talked about in the same sentence is attesting to how good the 335 is...

19 less HP on "Steve's" car...makes me believe BMW has some special press cars.

BUT...nothing my (upcoming) Xede won't fix!

The production car hasn't had a "software update" either.

I don't know if it would make that much difference but there was a 20 degree higher temperature and 40% lower humidity the day the press car was tested.

Wow, that's great and it's just insane

I think that the E46 M3 comparisons are great because there was no better reference out there to tell people; "eh, after all the complaining that the 3 series handled great but was under powered ... now, you've got it all!"

My Beak-in period is over; followed it to a "T", Never over 4500 RPM or 160Km/h. Now the real fun begins.

Lovin' every minute of it.

It should also leave you with a simple conclusion in mind ; The E92 M3 will be MENTAL

An analogy would be, Mortal Kombat Video Game ... there was beating your opponent & there was the part were you rip out the head and the Spinal cord*

*Disclaimer: Let it be know that I'm not promoting this; but simply using it as an example of Extremes.

The test car had almost every option available though. Not to mention that this price is the MSRP and it's 'cheap' to most places outside of the US.

if thats the caee, it should easilly follow that the e90/M3 can easily fall in the range of 70s Yikes!

Yep, that's what I've got in my garage and agree that it least gives a flavor of what the E90/92 M3 will bring. The difference, is going to be that the E92 M3 should, *should* weigh in at about 400 hundred pounds less than our cars and have another 20 to 40hp.

Now, back to this 335i dyno test. Edmunds got 279rwhp on an automatic! This might take away my last reason for buying a manual transmission if I decide to switch over to a 335i. It looks like this new steptronic is pretty damn efficient. Hell, their track times with the automatic were just as fast as Car and Driver's times with the manual.

Makes me wonder what they would have clicked off in a manual! I GTech'd mine at 4.8 seconds, in Arizona where our times are notoriously .4-.8 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile. A little more tire behind the manual and it would be silly quick!

This is particularly interesting because Edmund's 0-60 times are generally about .5 seconds higher than those of Car and Driver. This is a fine confirmation of the goodness of this car.

Yes, I found that to be very surprising as well. Edmunds doesn't usually beat their cars up (or do crazy launches from 3,000rpm or whatever) as much as the car mags, so their 0-60 times are usually a little more conservative. However, with the BMW 335i Coupe, they got the same exact time as C&D and some other testers.

Sure, that's expensive...my list was 46,470 which is pretty insane too. There was a time when an outrageous car like an M3 could be had for a hair under 40. I believe I'm thinking of the E36.....I remember looking at pics of the E36 M3 back in circa 1997 and thinking it was unbelievably sweet....
