Any prolems maintaining a steady speed?

Does anyone here have any problem trying to drive on a steady speed(IE:trying to keep 55 or 30 MPH)? When I went down to the BMW centere to test drive a 335i,I found it difficult to drive a steady speed, like 30,and always found myself braking and accelerating to keep up with the speed limit.

Does anyone have this problem,or anytips on how to maintain a steady speed?

Xavier

EDIT: PS,It was an automatic.

No probs maintaining speed. During a test drive who maintains speed? I gun that thing During normal driving, now that I own one, it's not hard to maintain speed. It did take some getting used to, from my previous (less powerful) car, to remind myself not to exceed 50mph... I'd find myself depressing the accelerator with the habitual pressure from before and I'd be at 60mph - oops!

Cruise control on road trips!

If you're not used to the car (any car), it is normal that over the first few miles, you won't have a proper feel for the acceleration and braking. Didn't you ever see how people drive as they come out of a used car lot? Lots of hard stops and such.

Sounds like that deputy was following too close to you.

A tip for driving: if you need to adjust your speed, do it with the accelerator pedal, not the brake pedal. Letting up on the accelerator will immediately slow you down if you're a mile or two above the speed you want to be travelling. This works with a new car or one you're familiar with.

However, if you use the brakes then the guy behind you is going to hit his brakes, because he's too close to you, and then the guy behind him hits his brakes, because he's too close to the guy behind you, and so forth, ad nauseum. In heavy traffic, ten minutes after you hit your brakes, the repeating brake lights may finally die down. And everyone wonders why four lanes of traffic can come to a complete halt.

The accelerator is touchy...something to do with 300+ HP/TQ and 3600 lbs

Assuming you drove a Step, I find it easier around town (<35) to always be in Sport Drive, because the constant shifting in regular drive makes the already touchy accelerator even more unpredicatable. Sport will hold gears longer. Even better is paddle control so you always know what gear you are in.

A variation on that wonderful theme is useful (when someone is crowding your tail on the highway) is to gently use the accelerator to open up the gap slowly over a few hundred yards, then as you see him/her begin the charge to close up on you again, ease off the accelerator ever so slightly.. then just as the gap closure rate is maxing out, ease back into the accelerator.. not too much, just a few mph, and you get this wonderful resonant sinusodial action of the dangling dangler's road-brick alternating between big and small in your rear view mirror until he either pulls off to have his engine surge checked or leaves a civilized gap behind you. The key is to be subtle and smooth for maximum effect...

The reason you do this, of course, as anyone here would know, is that your bimmer can stop in an emergency better than (s)he can, and are thus doing a proactive favor to everyone by this strategy ... It (usually) works on the general population, but as a word of caution, it is not well received by the local po-leese before donut break.

That's one hell of an example you're setting. I hope you cut the next person some slack who does that and you pull them over...

Officer, you just suck at teh driving. Haha jk. Nah the brakes and accelerator take some getting used to. Everyone I let drive the car looks like a first time driver for the first couple minutes. Flooring you into the back of the seat then slamming the breaks till the seat belts lock. I just laugh at them.

TX cops are the biggest assholes out there and the fines are ridiculous. $300 for going 69 on 60 Sunday afternoon, no one around me. Then they call my house for some donation crap.
And the Dallas ones love to pick on BMWs, f**kin hicks. Out of line of cars, he pulled right behind me (I was in the middle of the group), 83 on 60, don't even want to know...

But then I see so many crappy drivers around, not using blinkers, brake lights inop, running red lights... That should be punishable, not occasional speeding (at least should get a warning once). I guess being at the wrong place at the wrong time is what you call it...

Could be. Although from the pictures it looked like they're way too small to weigh anything..
