Pickin' up my 335i today, question's about break-in???!!

I did some searches and found some threads on this, so I wanted to post what I am planning on doing in case I am missing something/messing up.

My dealer lives 5 miles from some steep twisty canyons.

1. Drive to jiffy lube and switch the oil to valvoline 10 w 40.
2.Drive to canyon, uphill use WOT in 2nd, 3rd gears until about 5500 rpm. repeat
3. Let the car cool off and go back down the canyon. Downshift to load the engine in the opposite direction, repeat until I have driven 50 miles.
4. Go to jiffy lube and have oil/filter replaced.
5. miles 50-150, Use wot and downshifting to load the engine both ways and increase rpm to about 6000.
6. miles 150-250, use wot and downshifting/varying rpm's and go up to 6500 rpm but only stay there very briefly.
7.miles 250-500, use wot and downshifting and go up to about 6900 rpm but without hitting the rev limiter and only for brief periods of time never holding above 6k rpm for very long.
8. Bmw dealer oil/oil filter change with the bmw synthetic oil change.
9.500+, drive it like the beast it is.
10. change oil/oil filter at bmw at 1200 miles.

Whadaya guys think?
I have like three different articles I've read about it but I figured I might have fortgotten something crucial.

Thanks:rocks:

Sounds just like what my plan of attack is. Good luck, and keep this going.
PS. Glad youre not listening to the people who say "why wouldn't you follow the dealers guide, all youre gonna do is be .2 faster."

haha I saw that car last night at work. Im gonna guess yours is the black on black with nav and active steering?

Oh and there is nothing I can do to stop you from the hard break-in, I dont recommed it but its your car. Just DO NOT go to Jiffy Lube. I have seen way too many hack jobs from them. I would have it changed at the dealer or something. Working for the dealer I see the worst of the worst from Jiffy Lube. I wouldnt trust and random guy with your 50k dollar car.

WOW, never thought that it was such a science to break in a new car. I'm planning to follow oem(soft) procedures as did my brother in his e46 m3. He has 30k miles on it and not a single mechanical problem.

I have a customer with an E60 M5 that did not follow a break-in procedure at all. At 700 miles the car needed 2 quarts of oil, and since then has needed that much every month. I think BMW recommends the easy break in for a reason

Does the dealer do petroleum oil changes? I thought it was just synthetic? If they do, I will just have the dealer do it.

Are you a sales rep @ murray?

I didn't order nav or active steering or the adaptive cruise, just everything else.

If it makes you happier to do all that that's fine. It will not make any difference in the way things come out. The engine isn't build from pure aluminum you know.

Alternatively, keep the RPMs below 4K the first 1200 miles. Then do an oil change at 5000k.. you will get the same end result.

I can say this after owning 4 cars since they were new.

We only have the Castrol 5w-30 synthetic. We had two black on black e90s come in the other day, one had everything, and yours must have been the other. I am a service advisor down there, so when you need that oil changed come to me, I will help you out. Im Parker.

I dont know where you could get that done, sorry. If you have your heart set on the petroleum oil change, You could take it to some side shop and have it changed, just stay out and watch them. I have seen too many oil filter housings come in totally ruined and leaking because of shotty work.

Would you mind posting links to the articles you read? I'd love to read them as well.

I almost forgot... All new BMWs need a special tool to remove the oil filter, Jiffy Lube just uses channel locks and thrashes the housing

I've said this on other threads and I'll say my piece here and then shut up. No one on this forum knows more about this car than the people who built it, though many people talk like they do. Anyone can break a car in however they like. Just know that BMW did not simply write a break-in procedure in your owner's manual in order to screw you out of having fun with your car. They created a break-in procedure for a reason, and it should be followed.

I'd say going to Jiffy lube twice in the same day is a bit extreme, but I guess it's your money.

If I were you, I'd invest in an oil evacuator and learn to change the oil yourself (assuming you can change the filter on your own. I guess depends on whether park2670 is right or not). You'll learn a little something about your car, and you'll more than make up the price of the oil evacuator with how frequently you plan to change your oil (and save a lot of trips to the dealer).

I know its a different type of tool to remove the oil filter cap, but it could be the same as the N52. Ill have to check when I go to work on Monday.
