550i GT on I5 - Game Changer

Transitioning from 405 to I5 heading towards Valencia, CA today, I spot what I think is the new 7-series coming up on my left. As it passes I realize it's the 550i GT. My wife is straining to get a look - which means she's intrigued. I'm shaking my head thinking, this car is so much nicer on the road than in photos! This car instantly went from "what was BMW thinking" to "I can see a black 550i GT in my driveway"!

Looks like the GT is gaining acceptance as time passes.

When it first came out last year, I said i won't get it and will wait for the F10. Now having seen the F10 in person, I found the GT is a much better proposition. ESP when both are selling for the same price.

The GT has character!

I tried the 530d sedan, and while it's a great car, the GT is a nicer ride.
And the interior is much cooler. The standard 5 has a dull rear compared to the GT.

I saw it a few days ago, for the first time outside of a dealership, on the DVP (highway in Toronto). It looked much better than the time I saw it at a dealer, and I think the front and back are brilliant. But the body shape still gets some getting used to. I personally like BMW Tourings and Audi Avants, but this one still hasn't settled in yet; I'm sure it will.

I have been trying to decide between this and the sedan for months. I have viewed it many times at the dealer and have seen it on the road. Today, I was at a light at a 6 lane intersection. I was 10 deep and looking ahead at a gorgeous silver BMW with LED angel eyes. I was positive that it must have been one of the first of the '11 sedans. But, what do you know... it was the GT. I am sold for my family of 5. Thought for sure I would get Dark Graphite to hide its size, but Silver looked really good... Color choice is always tough. Black or Grey interior with the fineline matte wood for sure.

Congrats on your choice. I was mulling the same decision (f10 or f07) for quite a while. But the more I look at the GT, the more I like it. And yes, f10's rear seats are not as nice as the GT. Even the door panel interiors.

I believe GT is a car that takes time to grow on you. Most likely not love at first sight.

You definitely want to go for the GT (as you've decided) if your children are older. The 5 (at least E60) is alright for occasionally having five people, but it's more of a comfortable 4-seater.

You can have more luxury option in 5 GT. Electric rear windows sunblind is offered in F07 while mechanic rear window sunblind is offered in F10.
