Possibly moving to Oahu
Hey guys,
I've been offered to move my job to Oahu to take over for a guy out there who is moving back east. I have a few months to decide so I'm just trying to list the pros and cons of going. I have a few friends out there already who all want me to do it haha. So two major questions for everyone: 1. Any input to help my decision? Anything goes... 2. What's a good place for a single 22 year old guy to live? My one buddy lives right on Kuhio, but Waikiki can be expensive if you're not a student (which he is) Any help is appreciated!

I would do it if I was you ...
Pros: Your 22 and your single. If you don't like you'll still have a chance to move back and start over. Beach Outdoor fun Great place to relax Good weather. You can fly to another island in 30mins Nice mix of girls. Many asian girls will ask you to marry them for a green card ... If your good looking or not Great night life. Good eats. We already have a great group of BMW guys Cons: Expensive Bad roads No race track (yet) Night life/clubs get boring after a while Traffic Parking sucks Give yourself a few weeks and you've seen the whole island. I moved up here about five years ago from the Big Island where there was not much to do other then BBQ, surf and golf ... I'm not much ore older then you but I moved up here at 22, still here and still love my life here.

Yea I am definitely leaning towards doing it as of now. My only main concern is finding an affordable place where my commute wouldn't be too bad.
I've been out there twice in the last 4 months and have loved it both times, so I know I will love it, its just a huge move with all my friends and family back here. Work will be paying to move me though, including my car! 808E90, maybe we can finally grab that beer we never got to when I was there a few weeks ago! haha

well it's hard to sum it up in a few sentences, but i'll try. everything here is good (food, weather, friendly people, nice beaches, etc., laid back lifestyle, all the conveniences of modern life, it's pretty safe for a major city, are the few i can think of at the moment.
the two biggest negatives are it's more expensive here and traffic. almost everything is more expensive, gas, rent, food, etc. housing can be double or more of its mainland counterparts. and TRAFFIC almost everywhere you go almost anytime of day or night. this is random, but there's lots of bugs here. i guess it's because it's usually warm and bugs like warm weather. and there are really big cockroaches, the B52 Bombers as we call them. if i were you, young, single, and an opportunity to move here, i'd go for it. why not? it's not like it's a permanent decision. |

Yea I'll be working in Pearl Harbor, which is nice b/c it's kind of central. When I travel there for work now I stay in Waikiki, and that commute isn't too bad, something I could live with. I also go spend time with my friends upcountry, and that's not bad either, only about 30 mins.
Thanks for the input guys!

Heading to Maui in a few hours so don't have time to write much, but if you're gonna be working at Pearl, I suggest looking in Aiea; it was originally built up specifically for military.
I live in Waiks, and like you already know, it can be pricey (although looking out my lanai at surfers in the water beyond the Hale Koa and Hilton is fantastic and worth the price to me), but lived in Aiea when I first moved here in 95. Lots of high rises to chose from on Koauka Loop or at Colonade on the Green, which sits in the middle of Pearl Country Club. I rented a penthouse overlooking holes 5,6,7, not to mention the harbor and stadium. It's 5 minutes from the base, there's enough to do when you get home from work, and you can always drive town when ready to party. If memory serves me, I was paying about 1800 for two bed/two bath, like 1600 sq ft. Hope this helps and hit me back if want more info. For now, I'm off to the Valley Isle. peace g

My family and I had the pleasure of living in Mililani, HI (Oahu) for 3 years. It was without a doubt the best place we ever lived. We still talk about it all the time (and wish we never had to leave).
Our house was a very nice, 3 BR, 2 BA newer home with a 2 car garage. Energy prices (gasoline and electricity) are a little more in HI, but you can’t drive very far on Oahu anyway, and our house didn’t have heat or air conditioning so we pretty much only paid for lights (the house could have used AC during the summer though). Don’t believe the hype about the cost of living in Hawaii either. We moved from Hawaii to Burke, VA and we found that NOVA was more expensive! The rare opportunity to live and work in Hawaii is something you shouldn’t pass up, especially to stay in VA! |

Well guys thanks for all the input! I have decided to take the job, like you all said it's a great opportunity, and it's a minimum 4 year commitment, just like college all over again haha. I can also stay as long as I would like to.
I won't be moving until next year, but I'm still psyched about it!
