Automobile Mag: 2012 F30 / F32 3-series gets 5 variants, including GT. No M3 sedan.
Automobile Mag reports on the next generation F30 / F32 3-series, including a 3-series GT version. Interestingly, no M3 sedan will be made in the next generation.

The next-generation M3 will only come in coupe and convertible versions. In both cases, the 420-hp V-8 will be replaced by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight six good for around 450 hp.
I found this to be the most interesting thing in the whole article. |

so from 414 to 434 i wonder how much torque it has i bet a lot more than what we have now |

Bummer about the M3 sedan, I guess I will be holding on to mine for a while.
Also, no mention of the upcoming model's 6-cylinder engine options. I'm assuming the lone offering will be the N-55? If they only offered the car with an inline 4 they might as well call it the BMW A4 |

If they do bring a 4cyl to NA, that 252hp 2.0L four sounds like it would be a pretty good engine. I'm guessing it's boosted from the high HP rating, so that means it would have a boat load of torque too. If the torque curve is anything like the N54/N55, it would be faster than the current 328/330.

Nope, it is getting a TT I6, the new M5 will be getting the TT V8 that's currently in the X5M/X6M. They don't wan't the M3 to be faster than the M5.

...and it will sell in large quantities.

Also, they're not going to bring us the M3 sedan but they are making that abomination of design known as the GT? BMW has really gotten off in the weeds these past few years with all of these niche vehicles. No wonder momentum has swung in Audi's favor, they are focused on building high quality versions of the vehicles people have always wanted to buy instead of building a bunch of weird niche cars that no one wants.

I can't believe anything until I see a BMW publications stating these items. Seems like a drastic change and it would have to be one revamped N54 to be able to handle all that power. HPFP would need to be upgraded, advanced cooling incorporated, etc. Under that kind of stress I would wonder a bit about longevity but I just like everything else, BMW will pull it off and make it worthy of the roundel.

So those wanting a new redesigned M3 sedan will now head over to Audi for their RS4 and to Mercedes for their AMG C63. Too bad.

While the legend of the 3 series has been built around inline 6-cylinder engines, I'm very intrigued to learn more about the 4-cylinder mills that are planned for the 3. If it's turbo charged and puts out 250+ horsepower, I don't care how many cylinders it has.. |
