Can't wait for Monday (march 15th)

As some of you may know, we have a law here in Quebec that prevents us to install Summer tires before March 15th.

Well, taken out the new 18" this weekend and placed them beside the car.

Really can't wait any longer to remove those winter 17".

Is there a lot of people who're having a hard time waiting ??

Yes, fines range from $200 to $300.

Thats interesting law. So if there is a big dump of snow on March 16 there is an accident because they car was using summer tires, I guess its ok?

Yep.

Meaning that your insurer WILL cover the loss ... but won't if the tires are on BEFORE the 15th.
I dunno, something magical about that date.

We are required to have the winter tires on by december15th, and can remove them by march 15th.

And studded tire can be used between october 15th and may 1.

There's something about laws ...

i actually think this law is quite appropriate given our road conditions in canada.. they just have to set a date or else the law would b unenforceable..

too many ppl cheaping out on tires in ontario and causing unnecessary accidents.. the absolute worst winter tire is still better than the very best all-season tire, i won't even mention summer tires b/c that's just blatant ignorance.. a car is an ongoing investment, either through maintenance or proper equipment, not a one time outflow of cash..

In Ottawa, which isn't that far north of Montreal, we usually get a pretty reasonable dump of snow sometime in late March or early April after the winter snow has melted away. Plus, the forecast for the next week puts the highs at around 7º C, meaning that temperatures are still mostly too low to get good traction with summer performance tires, even if the ground is dry.

I think I'll leave my winters on until late April when the snow is gone for good, and when some of those potholes have been filled in. Until then, I'll make use of the winter tread and extra pothole-shock-absorbing sidewalls that are on my winters.

I agree, winter tires are much better when temps go under 7 Celcius.

I's not that the law is inapropriate, it's more about the situation.
Seems like spring will be in early and will wait a while before putting the summer tires, but not that long.

Those LM-22 doesn't like warmer weather.
I'm the first to admin that this law was required simply by the behaviour of some drivers.

But to see this law enforced, and having a neighbor driving a car with a broken exhaust and holes 0n the sides makes me wonder ...

Why enforce a law for winter tires and not get one for mandatory inspections ??

Yes, it can be a little more slippery to drive at 10 degree C. with summer tires, but with a mandatory inspection, I would have a little less chances of damaging my tires and wheels over a "dropped" muffler or part of a catalyst shield.

Then again, it's my 2¢.
