M3 vs C63 AMG?
No, not a speed battle
I have a C63 AMG and am seriously tempted about getting an M3 but would have to sacrifice the AMG in order to get it. I already have a 09 335d which i absolutely love but it just doesn't have the noise My question is, am i doing the right thing by getting rid of the AMG for an M3 when i already have a 335d (remapped)? I know this a BMW forum so i expect all M3 owners to say there better and i know there quicker round a track but track speeds is of no interest to me. The AMG is a nice comfortable (slighty more than the 335d) ride around town and A roads. Looks wise, the AMG has never really won me over and prefer the 335d looks by quite a long way. The 335d also seems more nimble and handles a bit better - although that could be my driving! The noise of the AMG is incredible tho but sometimes a little to much and i do feel a bit... 'look at me' just going to Tescos etc no matter how light-footed on the throttle. M3 owners, whats your average mpg as i get around 17-18 for mixed daily driving. Thoughts please...

I've been going thru the same mental process..M3 or C63 plus others.
My hobby is cycling so I really need an estate and if there was a M3 Touring on offer it would be in my garage now..i'm considering the recently announced a Alpina B3s Touring I prefer the look of the Merc over the M3, but then again i've just realised i'm now nearer 50 than 40. You say you get 17-18 out of the C63 in mixed driving, what would you get in your 335D in the same conditions?

I usually get 40-42 in my 45 mile to work run in the 335D so I suspect I'd get 20 give or take out of the C63 & probably even an M3 DCT. I think you ought to see if you can borrow a M3 for 24-36 hours and see if you miss that low down grunt of the big8. Try a DCT which will be sharper than the traditional auto of the merc. You might just like it

The c63 boot opening is bigger than the 335d. Our double buggy is a real squeeze getting into the opening but the c63 has a few inches to spare. I'll deffo go for a DCT/auto rather than a manual in whatever car i'd buy from now on.

Round town driving in my M3 is 16mpg ish - the V8 noise is sublime and the DCT box is spot on IMO - go for it

I hope you don't mind me saying, but the BM, Merc & Disco seems a rather odd (albeit very nice) mix of cars.
All 3 of them accommodate 4+ people. 2 of them fast saloons. Looking at replacing one of those fast saloons with another fast saloon... but you don't seem too sure why. Is there another way? Maybe a 997 or something |

I dont think you will find the M3 much more capable than the 335d on the road. Track definately.
For the road the C63 AMG is a better car than the M3 in my opinion. If you go to the Ring every month then M3 probably will float your boat more. If you really fancy a change, why not a used Porsche Turbo and keep the 335d etc?!

In my experience
its the thrill of the change rather than the long term ownership that brings the increased pleasure
You love the AMG. You'll probably love the M3 but likely for different reasons. Long term, the M3 probably won't make you any happier than the AMG, because by then you'll be thinking about an RS5 or some such. Hey, its the nature of consumerism....replacing something that's still perfect is the prerogative of the wealthy and provides employment to millions Given that you already have 2 4 seater, high performance saloons, why not go for something completely different like some open air motoring or if you don't like your hair in tangles, something like a Cayman S? On the basis that a change is as good as a holiday, something completely different would add an additional level of enjoyment, rather than being more of the same. C63 seem to holding their value exceptionally well. They are able to be purchased new for £47690 plus options say50/51k and 2 years later are offered up for 45k
Can that continue? prob not. So it might be a good time to move on

I had a Cayman S PDK on loan while my Boxster was in for a service and all I can say is "stonking". I can't see anything getting close to that on road or track for the same money.

RS4 have the DRC trouble, plus the clogging up of the engine to bring the power down to 360-370 and getting a bit long in the tooth. I do fancy a S4 avant, or S5 sportback.
RS6 Avant is defo on the list, as is the forthcoming RS5. Is they made the RS3 I'd have one in a heartbeat to replace the Golf, wife hates the 1 series so that ever going to happen. As we have the Golf I might just get the 997s PDK I really want. right just off out for 100km in the hills on my bike, 1st race next Sat so need the training

DRC is covered by audi warranty for 5 yrs. so not a problem. The engine clogging issue reducing power, HASNT been proven by a bench dyno to asses power and to be fair im never wanting for power, its a proper fast car. It is a 5 yr old design though. I looked at a S4 avant before the 335d and it really does struggle to get 20mpg so the 29.1 mpg audi suggest is pure fiction. 60mile bike ride that no good for your prostrate mucka......

60 mile bike ride no problem on ya mans bits if you have proper shorts & saddle set up, I was going well and would easily been first of the 30 back......that is until a girl in a ford Ka turned across me and I ended up smashing her window screen with my back. I'm almost ok, been checked out by A&E got a very sore thumb. Not broken but it hurt straight after the impact. Back legs & shoulder bit sore. Bike is buggered, forks snapped (£300)..Carbon frame might be toast...new frame & forks will be £2200 Could have been a lot lot worse.

Long distance cycling has been linked to male infertility, erectile dysfunction and testicular damage. There are several articles published in the medical literature (several were published in the British journal of Urology if you want to see for yourself). This seemed to be related to the effects of heat, friction and impact from prolonged periods of time on the saddle. The most severe problems, however, were experienced by cyclists that do around 300km a week (186 miles) which is beyond what most enthusiasts do...

I get about 18.2mpg with mostly in-town driving, and in the heavier e93. If you dislike the 'look at me' nature of the AMG exhaust, then the stock M3 exhaust will probably suit you perfectly - it's relatively quiet, unless you floor it, then it brightens up a bit A few people here have replaced the stock exhaust with 'look at me' alternatives... |
