First Oil Change
with the service covered by bmw, what are you guys doing about first oil change? Are some of you insisting they change the oil after the first thousand miles or so, like what used to be done, or letting it go longer? If longer, how long?

unlike the M3, we don't need the 1200mile "first" service, but even though BMW will only perform the services when the computer asks for it, you can definitely have them do it, except it will cost you every time it's outside of the computers request. or if you know what you're doing, do it yourself.

The first oil change is at 30 000km or 2 years. Whatever happens first. That is they way in Europe!

there's nothing set in stone, your 2.5 liter engine might not require it for 15k or 20k miles, but the 3.0 with Turbos might require it at 12k miles. it's computer based and it takes into account how you drive, length per trip, engine temp, outside temp and many other factors and the car will notify you.

first off, get rid of your explanation points, you come across as if you're yelling at me and i'm not yelling at you. secondly, i don't care if you're Franz Josef Popp jr., you contradicted yourself in the previous post and you did it again in this one.

Just drive the car
Put all worries away. Just having fun driving your car.
One day the car tells you "I need oil change" then you go for it For me I don't count the mile or time. Do whatever the car tells you. BE HAPPY

You a right about the oil shift. I just tried to say that it basicly is 2 years/30000km, if you drive it like you have stolen it you have to have service faster. pretty much what you said! OK? I hope I dident make you to angry! Wasent the intention.

I believe the service intervals are different in Europe vs USA and Canada. For normal driving the US cars will car for an oil change somewhere between 10-15K miles. Perhaps this is related to the "free" maintenance. I am surprised that the European cars are set to go as much as 30K kilometers before an oil change is indicated.

Break in Fluid changes are not optional for me
Quote:
I am sorry but you are WRONG!! During the break in period, any car will have wear on metal linkages and surfaces, not just "Cheap" cars. That being said, BMW engineering is so precise that "minimal" wear occurs during "break in" or the first 1200 miles. This wear is determined to be negligable by the BMW "bean counters" and therefore the first oil change and Transmission Fluid change is not required until "BMW says so." Trans being a "lifetime fill" (that according to BMW) never needs changing. That is of course not true. However you will not ever notice the effects of NOT changing the break in fluid - if you plan on getting rid of your car at or before the warranty runs out. BMW has done the math and they know that most people do not keep their cars past 100K miles. So the warranty and fluids are all calculated to be changed in order to ensure that you will have very few problems 0 - 100K miles, as long as you service the car according to the BMW service schedule. As a soldier stationed in Germany, I bought a 3.5i and at 1200 miles paid for the oil and transmission fluids to be changed. Germany does not offer the free scheduled service that you get in the USA. So I did it as I try to take meticulous care of my cars. That and I keep my cars past 100K miles. I hope this helps.. RLTW |

you are basically correct though in the us the warranty is down to 50k miles. for my 3.0 the "scheduled" oil change is 15k or once a year. I keep my cars, basically, forever. So i will change the oil every 5k miles and let the dealer do every 3rd one. at 30k miles, the transmission fluid will be flushed, rear differential drained and filled & power steering fluid changed. again, if you want your car to last to 50k miles, follow bmw's service schedule, if you want to hit 200k miles, you'll have to do a LOT more. it simply depends on how long you plan on keeping the car. |

I am not sure what you mean by that.. But I trust the (few) certified BMW mechanics that I work with in Stuttgart and Mike Miller (of Bimmer Mag) more than the collection of "experts" here on line.
As for the 50k warranty versus 100K - I was referring to the BMW CPO warranty that BMW offers after the initial warranty runs out. But again, I am not an expert.. "Scott'sZ4" obviously knows more than I.. |

The missing of one oil change in at 1k miles seems insignificant, when you look at the big picture.
If you follow the proper oil change period up to 100k miles and have the car maintained at the proper time, you should be OK. You just don't hear about many BMW engines dying between 48k- 100k miles, and those that due are probably due to neglect, not because they missed the 1k oil change. So, this seems like a moot point, even for us in the US with the 48k mile warranty. |

I've had numerous BMW's, diesel and petrol. I've always gone by the car's service indicator. I've never had excessive engine wear, oil usage or other issues. Modern manufacturing tolerances and good quality oils must count for something.
