Is using a donut as a spare only for size? Can I do this?

Im still deciding what to do about a spare. Why cant I buy a cheap $50 rim and cheap tire from tirerack and have them mount and balance it. Plus buy a scissor jack and lug wrench.

Thats much cheaper then the $250-400 spare tire kits available. Is the only reason for a donut, the weight and size? How small of a rim could I use?

I'm not sure about tire size, but i know a lot of people just get a tire repair kit from walmart or something. Have you considered that instead?

That's probably a lot cheaper...but its not like having the piece of mind of having a nice full sized tire i guess

Yeah I have one. But for long trips into the mountains you need a spare. There is the tischer kit, the bavauto kit but they are both $300 or more. Im trying to make something cheap.

size does matter lol

With your "xi", diameter does matter. if it is to small your x drive thinks that wheel is spinning (loss of traction) because it is turning faster than the other 3 wheels. same thing goes for ruining 1 tire, and replacing it w/ a new one. if the other 3 wheels are say at 50% wear, you might have to replace all 4 tires.

i bought the E60 spare kit. diameter is good, and same bolt pattern as my E90. yes i know, $275 f/ Tisher.

I see your Avatar has changed a bit!

if you carefully select your tire size, you can build your own donut spare for your car, just like you suggested for cheap. you just have to make sure the overall tire diameter is the same (or very close to) your current tire setup.
