How are the X1 hifi/speaker upgrades?

OK so most people are aware that the base hifi's in BMWs are awful. It's the one option that most people (myself included in the past) generally regret not ticking.

Usually the Business upgrade is pretty good on its own and I'm thinking of ordering this in lieu of the Professional upgrade. Has anyone sampled this or the Professional upgrade in an X1? how does it sound? I'm more interested in range and clarity than '000s of Watts...

thanks

The standard equipment in France is business autoradio which include only 5 loudspeakers (this basic one is not available in UK)

The standard equipment in UK is professional autoradio (663) which include 6 loudspeakers (6th is under passenger seat)

upgrade are business loudspeaker system (ref 676) with 8 loudspeakers
or
Harman-Kadron loudspeaker system (ref 688) 340W with 11 loudspeakers + equaliser AuraVox

My opinion is that the standard UK equipment is not so bad and it seems that you can easily upgrade it by yourself by adding 2 additional loudspeaker (from 6 to 8)
Nevertheles if you are a melomaniac then do not hesitate to select Harman-Kadron but it will be really more expensive

Ah - but the key is not just the no. of speakers but a dedicated amp. You can add the tweeters yourself easily (I did this in my 1er) but it will still sound bad without the dedicated amp that you get with the factory upgrades. Thats the key - not just the extra speakers but an amp driving the sound instead of the headunits.

OK
Then there is only one choice for you, the Harman-Kadron loudspeaker system (ref 688) with 340W numeric amplifier and with AuraVox equaliser

The business upgrade also includes a dedicated amplifier- I'm just looking to hear from anyone that's heard it to see if its good enough. £500 more for the harman could be spent on other options.

you are right
I've just checked and there is a 180W amplifier + equalizer also included with option 676

I found the info in the Belgian catalog (sorry it is in french)
**********************
**********************

Thus, this could be a good choice
I have no information concerning that option, I can only say that I found the sound with the standard equipment is OK (but I am not melomaniac in a car)

I have business system and comparing with my VW Polo standard sound-system sounds bad. Viewing some e87 post regarding to sound-system a good improvement would be to install tweeters in doors. I think is the cheapest way to improve it.

I think you are confusing the Business Headunit with the Business Speaker/Hifi Upgrade. If you have the business system (i.e. speaker upgrades) then you have front tweeters.

Hola, My first post in this forum...

My X1 sdrive18d has also got the Business radio 5 speaker system...The sound really sucks so I'm planning to do an upgrade too...not H/K though...

I'm thinking of adding 2 tweeters (one pair in the front another in the back) and 2 subs underneath the front seats...

Does anybody know how to remove the front door panels without breaking them????

Cheers

My X1 has the hi fi upgrade which has 8 speakers, and it sounds great ... my previous car was a Mitsubish Lancer with the Rockford Fosgate system, which had more bass punch, but I like the overall sound of the X1 system better.

I have the Harmon Kardon in my 335 (came standard). It is really, really good, so I had no hesitation in adding it to my X1.
