Kept Bending Rims. What went wrong?
I put a brand new set of 19 X 8" (all the way around, not staggered) 1-Piece Low Pressure Cast rims and Goodyear Asymmetric tires on my car last spring.
I have a 2008 335XI Coupe. I bent a rim each month I had the rims on the car and had to replace them each time. I bent them in dips in the road or small pot holes (nothing huge). I did not hit anything with excessive speed. Was driving 40 - 60 mph. After I replaced all the rims with new ones, I sold them. I couldn't afford to keep replacing them (yeah, it was a tough lesson to learn each time I did it, I thought it would be the last time). I am now looking for new rims and tires. Was it the way these rims were made that made them weak? Was it the rim and tire combination? Should I go with an 18" rim and tire? Should I go with a rim that is made differently? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

What was the tire sizes? Its hard to tell without knowing that. What part of the wheel bent?
If its a 1-piece it shouldnt happen that frequently, so maybe a defective wheel. What brand? |

Tire Sizes
The tire sizes were the same all the way around. I had 235/35's. The tires were GoodYear Asymmetric's. The bending occurred on the outside of the rim, almost like a flat spot. This happened on the front rims FOUR TIMES with me replacing them each time until I learned a hard lesson. The description of the rims say they are 1-Piece Low Pressure Cast. Thanks for your help. I don't want to repeat the same thing twice!

rial isnt exactly known for high quality wheels...and having driven on long island roads, I'm not surprised you dented them...the roads are awful
get tires a size bigger (245s perhaps) so you have a little more rubber and get forged wheels and perhaps you stand a chance for a little longer other than that, in LI...id say 18s with forged wheels will give u longer lifespan

Was thinking the same thing
I was thinking of 18's, although the 19's look nicer. I just don't think I can avoid bending them though. The roads here are terrible. What brands seem to hold up the best??

put your OEM wheels back, they are much stronger than your average cast wheels.

bent wheels
low pressure cast wheels are the cheapest way to build wheels, kinda like water in ice cube trey. most are not heat treated and as such bend relatively easy. go with CPC counter pressure cast wheels and you wont have as big of a problem. hitting dips 40-60 mph will bemnd most rims.

lol I wish this was true it all depends on the roads you are driving. Guys in the UK always report cracking issues on OEM 19" wheels. I myself have a set of OEM 18" which are all bent thanks to Toronto roads...

I am leaning toward another set of OEM
I am leaning toward another set of OEM wheels, probably 18's. If I go with aftermarket, any brands hold up better than others? THANKS!

I have Rial winter set. I used to live in Hamburg NJ and worked downtown NYC. I can confirm while OEM not dent proof, they do standup better than the Rials. No surprise they cost a lot more too. With the roads on the East Coast big cities, I would never get 19inch wheela on this car. I wanted 313s forever, but they were only 19s, so I didn't buy. They have them in 18s, and I will be getting those when $$$ allow. My Rials are 18s because I wasn't going to put 19s on while I was up in the NE let alone here at home in the mid-Atlantic. I know many guys who drive in the suburbs have no issues, but if you drive in big cities, 19s are bad idea.
