Exclamation Dangerous Tires on 20/20 - Do you check tire mfg date?

I just saw this 20/20 report on the dangers of selling new tires past their non-existent expiration date. Quite shocking, really...

Do you guys ask for the manufacture date when buying new tires? Do tire stores even have this information on hand when they order from their distributors? How "fresh" should tires be when they are purchased new? 6mo? 1 year?

I always look at the tires before they are mounted and note the manufacture date next to the DOT number. Anything older than 9 months I ask if they have any newer tires in stock, anything over a year I would refuse.

The tirerack link below shows how to read the manufacture date.

i think the general rule is 5 years max for tires. Which is kinda hard to get tires last that long. Besides before the 5 years are up, it'll probably start cracking up and stuff, by then you wouldn't even want to use em

So if you find out that your tire is older than 6 years, you can bring it back to the place that you purchased it at and demand new tires?
