What happened to the 528i / 535i?

When I saw that the E90 325i / 330i sedan was being upgraded to a 328i / 335i respectively, I immediatly thought the 5 series would have the same treatment, but I haven't seen any announcements yet. I seemed only logical, since they were sharing the same engine.

It takes time for engine changes to filter through to different models

Next possible slot for a change is March 2007 production, and March production has been a engine change time for 5 Series before

Remember the 5 Series facelift is also due next year, and usually the facelift gets new engines

The 5 series probably has to wait for a suitable V8 replacement also, since its likely that an E60 with the 3.0L N54 engine will offer performance veyr near that of the 4.8L N62 powered 550i. On paper the N62 offers a 20% advantage in power and torque. But peak RPM is higher. And the bigger factor is that the 550i weighs much more than its inline 6 powered sibling, the 530i. If you put the N54 in the E60 to make a 535i, it will increase weight a little over the 530i - yes. But not more than 100 lbs probably. The extra weight the 550i carries will negate most of the advantage of the V8 over the turbo 6.

Word is a turbo'd V8 is coming to aleviate all of this. I don't think the timeframe is known though. In the meantine, maybe they can bump the N62 to 400+ hp (perhaps with a displacement increase)?

The turbo V8 should debut in the next 7 Series ( the F01,F02 )

Word is that the 550 will get the bi-turbo 4.4 litre V8 to will replace the current 4.8 litre V8.
Next in line will be the 535 getting the 3.0 litre bi-turbo I-6.
Possible MY2007/2008 US line up:
550i with the bi-turbo 4.4 V8
535i with the bi-turbo 3.0 I6
528i with the NA restricted 3.0 I6

When will the next 7 series be released? Should be in 2007/2008 right?

Should be round September 2008

Its believed the facelift 5 Seres would just get a uprated V8, not the turbo one.
